We hope that you enjoyed the wonders of God through the brilliant color display this fall. The boat is in, the dock is beached, the leaves are raked and we are ready, well maybe not mentally ready, but prepared to tackle the winter and the wondrous sites and activities it offers. As we look forward, we must plan for the Blessed Christmas Season. To start it off right, we will be “Hanging The Greens” in our Sanitary and Fellowship Hall. Please mark your calendar for December 3 to start the festivities. We will need help on Saturday, 12/2 at 9:00 A.M. to bring the boxes of decorations up from the basement. We also need TALL & small helpers to assemble the Sanctuary Christmas Tree, and a lot of people to stay after the Worship Service on Sunday to hang lights, ornaments, garland etc. Many people make for fast and light work. As always, your Membership Committee will be serving a delicious hot lunch that promises a celebration of hard work and the Joy of the first Christmas Fellowship. Please bring a plate of Christmas Cookies to share. The last few years, we have worked with such efficiency that we were sitting for lunch by noon. This gives you the rest of the afternoon to shop, wrap, bake, decorate your home, watch football, take a nap or whatever suits your fancy. We really look forward to seeing you there for all the fun!!

On September 10, we installed new members Dave & Jan Edgecombe, Matt & Katie and Grace Ellingson, Denise Goldsworthy, Richard & Sue Strauss, and Phil St. Claire. I hope you have met them all and had a chance to greet them with a warm welcome. As soon as I can pin them down (it is not easy for any of us!) I will help you get to know them in the Chit Chat.

Speaking of that, here comes Matt, Katie and our tiniest new member, Grace. Matt and Katie both grew up in Milwaukee without knowing one another. Katie attended UW Madison for her Undergraduate Degree. She worked in Minneapolis for 10 years with Autistic patients and as an Emergency Room Technician. She went back to school to earn her Physicians Assistant Degree at Augsburg in St Paul. Her grandparents lived on Clear Lake in Boulder Junction. When her grandmother passed away, Katie moved to northern Wisconsin to help her grandfather. She worked at Marshfield Clinic in Park Falls as a Physician’s Assistant. When her grandfather passed away, Katie decided to move back to Milwaukee. It was at this time that she met Matt. He was living in the same condo as her mother. It seems that the north woods kept calling Katie because she moved back to work as a “floating” PA for Marshfield Clinic in Mercer, Minocqua, Eagle River and Phillips. She made the trip to Milwaukee to celebrate Thanksgiving with her family and, as luck had it, she reconnected with Matt. As they say, “the rest is history”! For the next year, Matt began traveling north to visit Katie. When the distance created a constant yearning for one another, Matt joined Katie “Up North”. They were married on October 7, 2016. You might want to wish them a Happy First Anniversary!

Until Matt joined Katie in northern Wisconsin, he worked in Milwaukee, mostly as a carpenter. He also worked for a Water Co. Due to Matt’s all around talents and abilities, for the past 14 years, he has worked as a Handy Man, first in Milwaukee and now in our surrounding communities. I know a lot of us could use his array of services.

` On May 19, 2017, Baby Grace joyfully came into their lives and enhanced their love for family. As a dedicated and loving father, Matt is home with Grace on Tuesdays and Thursdays. He is out in the “field” working on Monday, Wednesday and Friday. When there are times that both Matt and Katie find themselves torn away from home, Grandma (Katie’s mom) happily and proudly takes over. They feel Blessed to have her by their side.

Our new little family has been living in their home on Little Manitowish Lake for 3 years. Katie is working at the Aspirus Clinic in Woodruff as a Family Practice Physicians Assistant 3 days a week. She hopes to soon adjust her work schedule so she can spend more time at home with Grace. As fun loving north woods dwellers, they enjoy snowshoeing, hiking, pontoon boating, kayaking, and love their dog

Sofie. In addition, Matt loves wood working and biking. For all of you wood working guys, meet with Matt on Sunday and maybe you can share ideas and skills. Anyone who would like to hold Grace and give her some lovin’, she is willing, sweet and cuddly. We can’t wait to have her in our Youth Group but we must wait a few years!! Hopefully, Matt, Katie and Grace have already felt warm welcome embraces.

This past Sunday, I had the opportunity to sit for coffee with Dave & Jan Edgecomb. We had so much fun sharing stories. There are easy to get to know and I think their full, happy life would blend with all of us.

Dave grew up in Utica, IL and Jan in Worth, IL. They met in High School, but Jan had no intention of dating him because he was too weird! He must have straightened himself up, because she surely did change her mind later on. Dave attended North Central College in Naperville, IL. Jan was still in High School when they met at the Golden Bear in Peru, IL. This was the beginning of a beautiful story! Jan attended college to earn her LPN license. They were married in 1979 when Dave graduated from college and Jan was still in Nursing School. Jan graduated in 1981 and 1 week later gave birth to their first son, David, Jr. Life took off with a roaring start as they added 2 mores sons, Dan in 1983 and Doug in 1985. Dave, Jr. is married with 2 sons, Dan is married with 2 sons and Doug is a confirmed bachelor. Their Grandsons are Will, Nick, Noah and Aiden. They are all located in N. Pekin, Oglesby and Lasalle, IL in the same area where their roots have been planted. These 7 boys and 2 “daughters” bring them a lot of joy.

Dave and Jan raised their family in various towns in IL, west of the city of Chicago. They settled in Utica, IL where Dave began his life. Their hearts longed for the country, so no surprise that they have chosen the north woods for their retirement. They have had their home in Presque Isle for about 6 years. Dave retired from the Mining Industry as a Purchasing Agent on April 15, 2016 at the age of 58. He fell into a great opportunity for early retirement. What a great way to celebrate tax day! They have just joined us full time in August 2017.

Jan has spent her 36 career as an LPN. During that time, she worked in Emergency Medical Service, acquiring a full Paramedics status. For 28 years, she worked in various Nursing Homes, Medical Centers, Dr. Offices, and was a volunteer School Nurse. For 4 years, she worked caring for a Special Needs child confined to a wheel chair, only leaving that position to move to Presque Isle. They miss each other greatly. Jan is filling her desire to work with Special Needs Children with a new position she is just now I found Dave and Jan to both be very outgoing, loving, giving people. They have both worked as volunteers for their Fire Service in Utica as EMTs, Jan a Paramedic, Dave a firefighter and serving as Fire Chief for 13 years. Jan was a CPR Instructor for over 20 years. Dave loves to fish and puts around in his machine shed, as he collects antique tractors and has an antique car. He is also a vegetable gardener and snowmobiler. In general, he just likes to be outdoors.

Jan likes to crochet, make fleece blankets, grow and arrange flowers, read and walk in the woods. She also snowmobiles with Dave. Contrary to Dave, she is an avid hockey fan. She is the only one who is allowed to wear a Chicago Blackhawks jersey in their house! You will enjoy having coffee with them and never run out of things to talk about. Welcome Dave & Jan!

Stay tuned, hopefully I will introduce you to a few other new members before the year ends. I can’t believe I just said that! Time sure flies when you’re having fun!!

Helyn Woolf, Membership Chairlady

STEWARDSHIP

Assembling the components of our church annual budget is similar to what goes on with individual family financial planning. All the sources of income are identified, and estimates are made for expected expenditures. The struggle comes with trying to keep our church expenses projections equal to or less than anticipated income. What is so unique about our church is that in addition to the conventional sources of funding – i.e. pledges, investments, bequests, and non-pledged giving – we also have a large component of our funds coming in annually from Fleazaar proceeds, truly a wonderful blessing. Each of these income sources is important in carrying out our mission not only in our own church – through our excellent staff, our music program our Christian Education commitment, and our men’s and women’s Bible studies, but also to our local community, the nation, and the world.

Likewise, when we respond with our offering of dollars AND time and talent, we are saying, “Thank you, God, for all of the blessings we have received.” Furthermore, we trust that our contributions will be used to the good of our neighbors here and in the world beyond.

As we are often reminded by Pastor Chips, a heartfelt “thank-you” directed to God for His involvement in our lives is a huge Joy to our Lord.

Respectfully for Stewardship,

John Suffron

Missions

As I’m watching the leaves fall, and see frost on the roof, it is a reminder that winter and Christmas are fast approaching. One of our very important missions, Christmas for Kids, is well on its way.  Thank you to Mary Koster, Nancy Russell, and Kristin Semmerling for a job well done.

As we heard the news of a Hurricane Harvey, Maria, and Irma, we wondered how we can help. Checks were sent  to the Presbyterian Disaster Fund....$2,000 earmarked for Harvey victims in Texas, and $1,000 to Maria victims in Puerto Rico.

Other finds released in October were:  Heifer International.......$200

                                                                   Samaritans Purse...........$250

                                                                   Pura. Vida .....................$250

The next fund raiser is "Christmas Joy Offering", which is held the four Sundays of Advent.  (More news on that in November.)

Loose Change collected in July, August, September was $371.25, and a check in that amount was sent to Dove. The recipient for October, November and December is the Boulder Food Pantry.

Once again, a big thank you to all for your generosity.

WESTMINSTER GUILD

On Thursday, September 28, Westminster Guild hosted

our Fall Cluster Gathering, which included a wonderful

speaker, a delicious lunch (from our cookbook!), and a

truly remarkable “Women of the Bible” fashion show.

This presentation featured our ladies as such notable

biblical characters as Mrs. Noah, Delilah, Ruth, etc.,

but the one you really should not have missed was our

own Helyn Woolf as Eve!!

Women from Presbyterian churches in Ashland and Lac du Flambeau, as well as our own church, enjoyed a very interesting program by Mark Naniot, Director of Wildlife Rehabilitation at Wild Instincts in Rhinelander. Mark brought Ruby, a red-tailed hawk, with him, and he kept us VERY interested as he explained the mission and the day-to-day operation of this wonderful organization.

Our October 5 meeting was our “work” meeting this month, during which we accomplished our kitchen cleaning project, and on Thursday, October 19, we discussed Lesson Two in our Bible study, entitled “Cloud of Witnesses: The Community of Christ in Hebrews.” This lesson focused on the connection between Christ and the living God and how that connection supports the life of the faith community. We discussed the “character” of God in Christ and how that character (with elements of strength, love, invitation, security, and covenant) impacts the community of faith. “In every age, we, God’s people, have looked at the full expression of the images of God throughout our tradition, and have latched onto those that bring us meaning and comfort that strengthen our faith.”

Our November meetings will be on November 2 and November 16. Please consider joining us at 9:30 AM, especially for our Bible study, which is normally the first meeting each month. Each of these lessons can stand on its own, and we have plenty of study guides available. All ladies of our congregation are actually members of Westminster Guild, and we would be so happy to have you join us!!!

Kay Suffron, Moderator

Time and Talent Opportunity for 2018

Are you a slightly persuasive and fairly organized person?

We have the opportunity for you to serve your church!

We need someone to enlist greeters/ushers for the 2018 calendar year.

Our church members are happy to serve, so getting commitments for this

friendly and easy job of being a greeter/usher is not too difficult.

Even if you are a snowbird or traveler, the internet and email will allow you to oversee this

scheduling from your warmer locale.

Please consider this volunteer opportunity and let Joyce Hoehn of the Worship Committee or Lois Bauers know of your willingness to serve.

We appreciate and thank Parker Sharpe and Margo Perkins for volunteering in the recent past.

FYI…

The 2018 GIVING ENVELOPES will be ready to be picked up soon. They will be on a table in the narthex.

If you do not have envelopes and would like them (you do not have to be a member to have envelopes) see Lois at the church office.

The Will of God never takes you to where May the Lord, Mighty God,

the grace of God will not protect you. Bless and keep you forever.

Grant you peace, perfect peace,

Hope in every endeavor.

The task ahead of us is never as great Open your eyes and see God’s face

as the Power behind us. Know God’s Grace, forever

May the Lord, mighty God,

Bless and keep you forever.

CHIT CHAT

Theologian and philosopher, Soren Kirkegaard says: “We are not human beings having a spiritual experience, we are spiritual beings having a human experience.” Isn’t that a powerful truth … we are spiritual beings from beginning to end.

Grace is the beautiful infant daughter of Katy and Matthew Ellingson, three of the newest members of our church family. As I recessed last Sunday morning, I looked at the incredible spiritual peace in Grace’s infant eyes as she searched the face of her mother Katy whose arms cradled her tiny life. At that moment, the infant is having a profoundly human experience,

a distinctly human experience, and a spiritual peace emanates from her newborn life. That is a human experience and it is not unlike the experience just days or hours before death.

This too is a profoundly human experience.

Dorothy is an elderly friend. Last night her daughter called me to her mother’s bedside for one final visit. Sitting on the edge of the rocking chair beside the bed; I grip the arm of the chair to counter my off-centered balance as I readjust the cool, damp towel on my friend’s feverish brow. We talk and we laugh; we reflect and we share. The daughter’s usual jocular nature then quiets. We speak in whispers, spirit to spirit, soul to soul, as we do with a newborn infant. I say my farewells, I pray with the family and with Dorothy, kiss her on the forehead, and walk out into the first heavy snow of the season.

The bud of life opens, and blossoms, and life ebbs. The unmistakable peace of a spiritual presence hovers over the places of beginnings, and that same kind of peace inhabits the place where life will end. It’s midnight as I drive home through the snow. Tomorrow is All Saint’s Day, and I am thinking about all of you who have become ‘saints’ in my life . Our experiences together across the days, months, and years are the bitter-sweet gifts you share among the saints of a congregation over an extended period of time. Baptisms, programs, projects, celebrations, and deaths populate those experiences. Each of the people we come to know and love as our own eventually move-on into God’s ‘nearer’ presence. This is all part of our human experience. One day, we too will be among those ‘called up yonder,’ and that will close one essential part of our human experience.

Something within each of us knows this precious life is the human experience of a spiritual being. Something within each of us knows to whom this life truly belongs. And so as spiritual beingsl, we thank God, for all the blessings of the harvest season, but especially we thank God for letting us have this human experience, and allowing us to share it one with another.

Your Pastor, Chips
