Fancy Folder Book Report

Fancy Folder Book Report Due September 2

TAG ELA

Imagine that you work for a major publishing company that produces books for students in the middle grades. Your job is to visit middle school libraries to persuade them to buy certain titles to build their collections.

Your "sales pitch" is crucial, because libraries do not want to purchase books that are not interesting to middle grade students. At the same time, they want to purchase quality literature that is well-written and adds value to their collection.

Sales pitches may take many forms. For the purpose of this ( your first!) assignment, you will create a visual sales tool that will convince middle school librarians that students will love your chosen book and they should buy it.

Your visual sales tool will be a folder. I will provide 18"x 24" black or white construction paper for you to use. You may use your folder, if you want.

1. Include on the front cover:

a. Title and author of the book

b. Your name

c. A hand-drawn or computer-drawn picture or graphic. You may NOT use an image, photo, or artwork from the internet. Artwork must be your own original work.

Be sure to keep the purpose of the folder in mind. It should be colorful, neat, stylish, and attractive so librarians will want to read it carefully.

2. Include on the inside left cover a summary of the book. The summary should include the following literary elements:

a. Setting

b. Characters

c. Plot (including conflict, rising action, climax, and resolution of conflict)

d. Theme ( This will be discussed in class before the project is due.)

Be sure to keep your audience in mind when you write the summary. You want to make the book sound interesting and desirable to middle grade students. Use persuasive language to make it sound really good!

The summary should be about 1 page typed (single space) or two pages handwritten (in blue or black ink.). Do not make it any longer; otherwise it will be a re-tell, not a summary!

3. Include on the inside right cover a review of the book. This is your opinion of the book, supported by examples from it. Try to tell three things about the book that you liked, tell why you liked them, and provide text or words from the book to illustrate. For example, if you liked how the author described characters so well that you could really visualize them, provide a quote from the book in which the author describes a character. The review should be no more than 1 typed page.

Be sure to keep your audience in mind when you write the review. Your goal is to make the librarian want to buy the book. (If you didn't like the book, explain what you didn't like but then tell why other kids your age might like it, even if you didn't.)

4. Include on the inside right cover OR back descriptions and illustrations of the main characters. Be as descriptive as possible. Explain the role that each character played in the plot.

Be sure to keep your audience in mind when you describe and illustrate the characters. You should make the characters appealing to middle grade students.

Good luck! I hope you make the sale!
