East Gippsland, like other parts of Victoria, has a history of natural and human-induced wildfires. Since 1980, approximately 370 000 ha have been burnt by wildfire, the largest single event being the wildfires of 1983 when approximately 230 000 ha was burned between January and March (DCNR 1995). ................
