Course Description

This course is designed to investigate and apply the basic concepts and principles of lifetime physical fitness and other health-related factors. Emphasis is placed on wellness through the study of nutrition, weight control, stress management, and consumer facts on exercise and fitness. Upon completion, students should be able to plan a personal, lifelong fitness program based on individual needs, abilities, and interests. This course has been approved to satisfy the Comprehensive Articulation Agreement for transferability as a premajor and/or elective course requirement.

Learning Outcomes

1. Students will be able to plan a personal, lifelong fitness program.

2. Students will be able to identify and understand the components of Health Related Fitness.

3. Students will be able to assess selected aspects of their current fitness level.

4. Students will increase the frequency at which they are physically active.

5. Students will increase their current fitness level.

Grading and Evaluation Methods

Exams

• Four exams will be given periodically throughout the semester covering lectures and/or reading material. Exams will vary in length and difficulty according to material covered. No make-up exams will be given without proper documentation or notice of absence by 8:00am morning of exam (ie. doctor’s note, jury duty letter etc.). Failure to provide proper documentation or notify the instructor regarding the missed exam will result in a ‘zero’ exam grade. All make-up exams will be given by appointment or following the final exam. No exceptions!

Written Assignments

• Each student will be required to hand in recorded data for each assignment.

• All assignments are due on or before a designated due date. No late assignments will be accepted.

• All handouts/assignments are to be kept in a neat chronological order.

Participation

• Students are required to participate in all in-class activities to the best of their ability. Appropriate dress is required for every class session and includes: running shoes, loose fitting shirts, shorts and/or sweats. No jeans, khaki shorts or street clothes at any time. Failure to participate or wear the proper attire will result in a deduction of the student’s participation grade.

Attendance

• Attendance is recorded from the first scheduled class meeting. Students are responsible for informing the instructor of any absence within 24 hours of their scheduled class time. Any student absent six hours of class (5 class periods) must satisfy the instructor that they should be permitted to remain in the class, or they will be withdrawn from the course according to the Student Handbook (See Attendance & Withdrawal policies).

• Roll will be taken at the beginning of each class, anyone arriving late should contact the instructor at the end of the class in order to not be marked absent. (Three tardies = one absence)

Fitness Testing

• Students are required to meet for “Pre & Post” Fitness Testing. All sessions will be held as scheduled “rain or shine” (unless the college closes). Textbooks, appropriate dress, and water are required. Due to safety and liability, failure to attend a Pre or Post test session will need to be completed before participation is allowed .

Quizzes

• Pop quizzes will be given periodically at the very beginning of class to ensure students are performing the required reading. Also, there will be one announced quiz on the muscles of the human body. No make-up quizzes will be given.

Exercise Log

• Students are required to participate in a cardio-respiratory routine during the semester. Modifications can be made according to personal preference and/or ability (i.e.: walking instead of jogging, etc.)

• Students are required to keep accurate logs of their workout sessions/efforts.

• Physical activities can be performed at home, neighborhood or at a fitness center. Be mindful of safety, (especially outdoors), temperature and your current ability. Appropriate dress is required for all physical activities (running shoes, loose fitting shirts, shorts or sweats. Remove all non-medical jewelry.

Late Work/Makeup Work/Extra Credit

Late work will not be accepted, unless student has made an arrangement due to an immediate emergency. Assignments are due on or before the assigned due date. If a student misses a class it is the student’s responsibility to contact the instructor within 24 hours of the assigned class to find out what they missed. Makeup work or extra credit will not be given. . Accommodation of Disabilities

Forsyth Tech is committed to providing reasonable accommodations to students with disabilities. Extended College Closing

Should the College be closed for an extended period, you will receive instructions on how to continue with your coursework through your Forsyth Tech student e-mail account (through Techlink.)

Pagers and Cell Phones

Rule 15, Student Code of Conduct: Forsyth Tech considers the use of cell phones to be disruptive to the classroom setting. Therefore, students are to turn off all cell phones and other electronic devices while attending class or participating in class-related activities (i.e., labs, clinicals, etc.). Students who do not comply will be considered in violation of the Student Code of Conduct, and appropriate disciplinary action will be taken.

Expected Course Schedule

Generally, the first 30-45 minutes of class will be dedicated to lecture. The remainder of the class will be the activity/exercise portion. This is subject to change as rain and other environmental factors may prohibit us from going outside. All exams will be announced at least one week before the scheduled exam and a review will be handed out by the instructor.
