New Imperialism Notes/Trends:

New Imperialism was caused by 3 basic motives:

1. Economic Motives. As European/western countries industrialize they realize they need MARKETS and NATURAL RESOURCES. Colonies provide these “ingredients”

2. Missionary Motives. Rudyard Kipling wrote “The White Man’s Burden” basically means that white/western society feels superior to nonwestern peoples AND it is westerners’ duty to “civilize” the nonwestern people. Imperialist motivated by missionary ambitions sincerely believe they are saving the “noble savages.”

3. Nationalism/Competition. The European countries are competing against each other for power, money, and influence around the world.

Basic Trends:

1. Europeans don’t necessarily care about non-westerners culture. This may seem harsh, but it really is focused around the idea that the imperialists view themselves as superior to the nonwestern culture. Therefore it is in the nonwesterners’ best interest to learn English and convert to Christianity.

2. Resistance to European rule. Regardless of the nonwestern region there are individuals that stand up to European imperialism in a variety of ways. A bulk of what is covered in chapters 6 & 7 focuses on these struggles.

3. Direct v Indirect rule. Different European countries set up different ways to rule their colonies in the New Imperialist system. In indirect rule, the local natives rule with the permission/guidance of the imperial power.

4. Benefits of Imperialism. Westerners also brought technology, improvements in healthcare etc. Imperialism wasn’t ALL bad…
