• Overview/Course Description

• The purpose of the Economics and Personal Finance course as a required elective in Virginia is to prepare students to function effectively as consumers, savers, investors, entrepreneurs, and active citizens. Students will also develop thinking skills that include analyzing real-world situations, economic reasoning, decision making, and problem solving.

• Student grades reflect student achievement and not student behavior.

• Quarterly grades will round up when the percentage is .5 or higher.

• Final exams will be given to students who are required to take them. There will be exemptions given for students with an A average. The final exam will count for 20% of the final grade, with the balance of the final grade equally divided across the four quarterly grades.

• The final grade is required to be calculated using the quality points and not percentages, letter grades, number or point systems.

• In addition to achievement, work habits as noted in the report card comments will be evaluated for each course using the following symbols:

+ - Surpasses Expectations

# - Meets Expectations

^ - Approaching Expectations

N - Needs Improvement

• Social Media Policy: In accordance with Arlington Public School policies on use of social media, this class will utilize APS platforms to communicate. Other than APS supported platforms, I will also use Twitter under the handle @hamrickpaige. Tweets are open to the public and are subject to acceptability standards as determined both by the websites and by Arlington County Public Schools. Parents are encouraged to follow me on all platforms.

• Expectations

• Students will be given an enriching, interesting and challenging class that introduces them to relatively unfamiliar topics and problems. Due to the nature of topics discussed, students may get emotional at times. All students are expected to treat each other and their ideas/opinions with respect. The class will consist of a mix of lecture, discussion, seminars, video clips/documentaries, simulations, interviews, outside speakers, analyzing primary source documents, individual and group work and presentations.  Everyone will be expected to participate on a regular basis.

• I expect the following from you during the course of this year:

• Respect yourself, me, and your classmates. Rudeness will NOT be tolerated.

• Respect my classroom and materials. Return materials to their original position and do not leave trash on the floor. You MAY NOT eat in class. You may drink in class out of cups/bottles with closed tops. If you spill, YOU must clean it up.

• Be on time to class.  On time means being in your seat with materials out and ready to work when the bell rings.  Entering class as the bell rings will be considered tardy. Pulling out your notebook after I tell you is ALSO considered tardy.

• Follow all school rules at all times.  The rules are specified in the student handbook. Those rules include, but are not limited to: dress code, plagiarism, cheating, electronic devices, punctuality, and food.

• All electronic devices must be off and put away before entering the classroom. You MAY NOT have any electronics out on your desk unless I specifically give you permission.  If I see or hear any electronic device (including headphones or earbuds in your ears during class time), it will be confiscated and given to your Assistant Principal.

• Participate in class enthusiastically and respectfully.
