Welcome to Economics! We have an exciting year planned for all of our wonderful academically talented students! Please read the following syllabus with a parent or guardian. Please have that parent sign the bottom of this syllabus acknowledging that you understand the procedures, expectations, and policies of this class.

Conference Hours: Thursday from 2:45 – 3:30 (or scheduled appointment)

Materials: The following is a list of supplies that you will need for Economics this year:

1. One three ring binder (2 inch)

2. One package of notebook dividers (5 dividers in a package)

3. Loose-leaf notebook paper

4. Pencils, Blue or Black ink pens – NO GEL PENS PLEASE

5. Pocket Collegiate Dictionary

6. Calculator (Texas Instrument/Business Analyst)

7. An open mind

Instructional Philosophy: Learning is a process in which students construct meaning as they acquire new concepts and extend their understanding of familiar concepts. By interpreting new information and applying skills strategically, learners connect new knowledge and understanding to what they already know, and they reorganize or adjust their understanding to accommodate the new information and ideas. In order for learning to be effective, students require differentiated instruction in the use of a variety of meaningful strategies and skills.

Course Description: The Economics course provides students with a basic foundation in the field of Economics. The course has five sections, fundamental concepts, microeconomics, macroeconomic, international economics, and personal finance. In each area students are introduced to major concepts and themes concerning that aspect of Economics.

Course Work: Students will be completing a variety of assignments in this course, including exams, unit work, reading assignments, essays, oral presentations, and projects. Students will also be expected to create presentations using computer technology, use the internet effectively for research, and use computer based assessment programs, such as PLATO and Quizstar, both in preparation for exams and as a remediation tool.

Major Projects: Various long and short term projects are assigned throughout the year. Sample project topics include, model Market Systems, Entrepreneurial Reports…etc. Students will receive a detailed handout describing each project as it is assigned. Students are expected to work on these projects outside of class, as well as in class.

2nd Infraction: Reflection corner with writing assignment (or substitute)

3rd Infraction: Parental Notification/Class Detention

Assignment Weights: Grading Scale:

Assessment during learning: (i.e. Skills Assessment, Quiz, Projects)= 25%

Guided, Independent, or Group Practice: (i.e. Classwork, Project or Performance, Homework)= 45%, Summative Assessments or Assessments of Learning: (i.e. Formal Post-Assessment Test, Culminating Project or Performance, Final or Culminating Exam)= 30%

A= 90-100, B=80-89, C=70-79, I= Incomplete, F= Below 70

SPECIAL NOTES

Attendance: Students who exceed four unexcused absences in any course during a semester will not receive credit for the course. Students must make up work or tests which were missed because of an absence from school within five days. It is the students’ responsibility to arrange for makeup work. Failure to make up work after such time will result in a grade of 0.

Work assigned prior to the start of an absence or suspension and due during the absence will be due immediately after the absence.

Consequences for Rule Infractions: Students who choose to disrupt the learning environment should expect any or all of the consequences specified. Consequences are assigned based on the nature and severity of the infraction.
