Biology Chapter 3 Study Guide

Answer the questions to study for the test. If you complete this as a worksheet you will get 10 points extra credit.

Cheat Sheet: You can use both sides of a 3 x 5 Card as a cheat sheet for the test. It must be hand written and not typed or photocopied. If you don't follow the cheat sheet rules you will not be allowed to use it on the test.

Questions:

1. List a few limiting factors and give an example of how they each might limit a population. 2. Explain range of tolerance using the Steelhead Trout example they give you in the book. 3. There was a volcano that wiped out a large forest. Use the stages of succession to describe what

you would expect to happen as vegetation grew back. Which type of succession would occur? 4. What are pioneer species? List examples. 5. What is a climax community? 6. What is the main difference between primary succession and secondary succession? List an

example of what could cause each type of succession. 7. What is the difference between weather and climate? 8. Explain how latitude affects climate? 9. Give a definition and make a list of the basic characteristics of each of the major land biomes,

Tundra, Boreal Forest, Temperate Forest, Grasslands, Savanna, Desert, Seasonal Forest and Rainforest. You would be responsible for knowing the information about each biome that they list in the textbook. I will not test you on any exact numbers, such as inches of rain etc. You will be tested on relative values, for example it is a warm dry climate or they get a lot of rain. Numbers may be used on test questions but only to give you perspective not to make sure you know exact values. (Don't forget to look at the beige boxes beside each of the biomes.) 10. Give a definition and make a list of the basic characteristics of each of the aquatic ecosystems, wetlands, estuaries, intertidal zone, open ocean, and coral reefs. You will be responsible for knowing the information about each ecosystem that they list in the textbook. I will not test you on any exact numbers, such as inches of rain etc. (See notes above) 11. Be able to compare the different biomes and ecosystems. 12. How do biological communities change with increasing altitude in mountain ranges? High mountain communities are similar to the communities found at what latitude (Biome)? 13. In lakes and ponds what is the area closest to shore called? What is the open water area? What is the deepest area called? In what two areas is most life found? See the diagram in your textbook pg 77. 14. What is a transitional ecosystem? 15. What is the difference between wetlands and estuaries? What types of organisms are found in these places? 16. Describe the intertidal zone. What special adaptations do organisms found in this area have? 17. In the open ocean what are the 4 parts we went over in class? What is the deepest area called? What is the area called where light can penetrate? What is the bottom of the ocean called? See the diagram in your textbook pg 80. 18. The abyssal zone and the benthic zone are both at the bottom of the ocean what is the difference between the two? 19. Can sunlight reach the benthic zone?
