WHEREAS: This City Council was deeply saddened at learning of the death of Jack Lemmon, one of the very best actors of his generation, on June 27, 2001 at the age of 76; and

WHEREAS: Jack grew up in Newton, Massachusetts and graduated from Phillips-Andover Academy and Harvard College where he excelled in his acting courses and served as president of Hasty Pudding; and

WHEREAS: Jack was an actor of immense talent and range; he executed outstanding performances in roles as disparate as the finicky Felix Unger in "The Odd Couple," the boastful Ensign Pulver in "Mr. Roberts," and a cross-dressing musician in "Some Like It Hot;" last year he won an Emmy for his performance as a dying professor in "Tuesdays with Morrie" and a Golden Globe for best actor; and

WHEREAS: Jack's passing will leave a void in the lives of all his surviving family, his wife Felicia Farr, his son Chris, his daughter Courtney and his stepdaughter; and

WHEREAS: Jack will be sorely missed by all he touched and loved; now therefore be it

WHEREAS: Ellen Kelly started the Cambridge-Ellis School, a non-profit, independent pre-school and kindergarten, which is a highly regarded institution; and

WHEREAS: The Cambridge-Ellis School represents many diverse families in the City of Cambridge; now therefore be it

WHEREAS: On June 25th, 2001 at the Gore Street field, the Cambridge Girls Softball Major League team, the Unknowns, played the last in a series of three games and won the title of champions for the fifth consecutive year; and

WHEREAS: The series was one of the most competitive in the history of the league with the rival team, the Angels, winning the first of the three games and the Unknowns picking up a win in the second game; and

WHEREAS: The Championship win was a result of hard work and determination of the entire team right down to the last minutes of the game; and

WHEREAS: This City Council was deeply saddened at learning of the death of Edith Blair Staton on July 7, 2001 at the age of 104; and

WHEREAS: Edith was born in the Blair House in Washington on September 6, 1896, granddaughter of a member of President Lincoln's cabinet; and

WHEREAS: As a young woman, Edith was interested in children and concerned that girls could not join the Girl Scouts until age twelve; after learning about English programs for younger girls while on a trip to England, she founded, with two companions, the Brownie Scouts, and she served as a local and national leader for many years; and

WHEREAS: When she was in her seventies, Edith moved to Cambridge to help raise her eight grandchildren after the death of their mother, Edith's daughter; and

WHEREAS: At the age of ninety-five, Edith's concern to truly live the values of her religion led to her decision to make a contribution to resolving the race issues we all face; and

WHEREAS: Edith, who could not participate in large meetings because of hearing difficulties, used her apartment as a place to invite students, mixed groups, many from Africa and other countries, for dinner and conversation, and for mutual learning; she often used a video "Healing the Heart of America," about an effort in Richmond, Virginia, to bring people together; and

WHEREAS: Edith's extraordinary life was filled with contributions to her family, friends, community and country; and

WHEREAS: Edith's passing will leave a void in the lives of all her surviving friends and family, her three granddaughters , Kate Sapin, Louisa Ellis and Anne McCaben; her five grandsons, John, Matthew, Daniel, Alexander and Peter; and her eleven great-grandchildren; and

WHEREAS: Edith will be sorely missed by all she touched and loved; now therefore be it

WHEREAS: Addiction is a chronic, relapsing illness that involves a number of brain chemistry disorders. Treatment for addiction is as effective as treatments for other chronic medical conditions, such as diabetes and high blood pressure; and

WHEREAS: Substance use and addiction result in hugh societal and economic costs. It was recently estimated that the cost of untreated addiction in the United States is $276 billion a year. Clearly, the toll substance abuse takes on the family and friends of the individual battling with addiction is immeasurable. But recovery is possible. Every day in every part of the United States, men, women, and youth are entering treatment and beginning the road to recovery and families seek hope and recovery in support programs and counseling; and

WHEREAS: National Alcohol and Drug Addiction Recovery Month celebrates the tremendous strides taken by individuals who have undergone successful treatment, families in recovery, and recognizes those in the treatment field who have dedicated their lives to helping people recover from addiction. This year, the national campaign focuses on supporting those in addiction treatment and recovery and those they directly or indirectly impact. It embraces the theme “We Recover Together: Family, Friends, and Community.” now therefore be it

WHEREAS: Firefighters Kenneth W. Souza and Thomas F. Cahill rappelled approximately 50 feet within the zero visibility bridge pier structure to provide emergency medical care and to rescue the young victim; and

WHEREAS: Fire Lieutenant Thomas G. Cauchon took charge of the rescue operations sector and professionally directed the technical rescue operation while simultaneously ensuring the safety of the victim as well as the rescuers; and

WHEREAS: The Incident Commander, acting Deputy Fire Chief Pasquale J. DeMaio supervised and coordinated the well-run rescue operation; and

WHEREAS: As a technical rescue, this operation utilized complicated set-up and hauling systems, and its success depended upon the professional support work and teamwork provided by all of the following firefighters:

WHEREAS: On June 29, 2001 Acting Governor Jane Swift announced the reappointment of Marvin E. Gilmore Jr. to the Metropolitan Area Planning Council; and

WHEREAS: Marvin Gilmore, a native Cantabrigian, has been a pioneer of minority enfranchisement for more that three decades; and

WHEREAS: Marvin Gilmore co-founded Unity Bank and Trust in 1968, the first minority-owned commercial bank in New England. From 1971 to 1972, Gilmore was the assistant executive director of Roxbury Children’s Services. Since 1973, Gilmore has been president and CEO of Community Development Corporation of Boston, the oldest CDC in the Boston area; and

WHEREAS: Marvin Gilmore is currently on the Board of Overseers for the New England Conservatory of Music, the Board of Directors of Greater Boston Legal Services, and is a member of the Massachusetts Community Development Finance Corporation; and

WHEREAS: Marvin Gilmore has been a member of the Metropolitan Area Planning Council since 1977, serving on its executive committee for several years. The MAPC is the public umbrella agency that oversees development and municipal planning in 101 cities and towns in Massachusetts. It is the largest of 13 regional planning agencies. WHEREAS: On September 8, 2001, the Commonwealth of Massachusetts will bestow a great and well-deserved honor on Edward J. Sullivan in a celebration renaming the Middlesex County Court House as the "Edward J. Sullivan Courthouse;" and

WHEREAS: Edward is a lifelong resident of Cambridge, born to Michael A. "Mickey the Dude" and Mary C. (Hart) Sullivan on February 25, 1921, the seventh of twelve children; and

WHEREAS: Edward is a World War II veteran and the recipient of an Honorary Doctor of Law Degree from New England Law School; and

WHEREAS: Edward learned politics and public service in his own home through his father's experience as a member of the Cambridge City Council; upon his father's death in 1949, he campaigned successfully for his father's vacant seat, and was elected to his first of four terms as a member of the Cambridge City Council; and

WHEREAS: Edward became the Mayor of Cambridge in 1956 when he was only 34 years old; thereafter, he continued as a City Councillor until 1959 (followed by his brother Mayor Emeritus Walter J. Sullivan and then by Walter's son, City Councillor Michael A. Sullivan); and

WHEREAS: In November of 1958 Edward was first elected Middlesex County Clerk of Courts, the first member of the Democratic Party to hold that position in the history of Middlesex County; and

WHEREAS: Edward is currently serving the eighth term of his 43 years of service as Middlesex County Clerk of Courts; he has served under six Chief Justices of the Massachusetts Supreme Court; and

WHEREAS: Edward has a strong reputation as an innovative leader in the court system; he was instrumental in implementation of the one-day one-trial jury system that was pioneered in Middlesex County, he initiated the computerization of the Middlesex court system and countless other systems improvements and modernizations; he created a diverse work force in the Clerk's Office long before affirmative action mandates; and

WHEREAS: Throughout his entire career as an elected public official, Edward's public service has been characterized by genuine concern for those who need help and tireless efforts to get them that help; now therefore be it

RESOLVED: That the City Council go on record congratulating Edward J. Sullivan on the occasion of the dedication of the Edward J. WHEREAS: It has come to the attention of this City Council that CRLS Russian language teacher Lucinda Leveille has left the city's employ after thirteen years of dedicated service; and

WHEREAS: Ms. Leveille founded the CRLS Russian program in 1987 at a time when citizens of the Soviet Union and the United States had not talked to each other for seventy years, the Cold War had discouraged Russian study in this country, and only ten percent of U.S. high school Russian programs were in public schools; and

WHEREAS: The lives of approximately 300 CRLS students were enriched over the course of 13 years by Ms. Leveille's love of Russian language and culture and by her exceptional ability to encourage and inspire teenagers; and

WHEREAS: Ms. Leveille's commitment to her students extended to organizing in 1989 the first privately-funded two-way exchange between a Soviet and a U.S. public high school, one that continued through April 2001 with St. Petersburg School #238, with the result that 60 CRLS students visited Russia and 84 Russian students and teachers visited Cambridge during the life of the CRLS Russian program; now therefore be it

WHEREAS: As always, The Caribbean Carnival will dazzle Cambridge with fabulous live music, including soca, reggae, salsa, calypso, meringue and many other marvelous musical offerings, irresistible crafts and delicious ethnic foods; now therefore be it

WHEREAS: This City Council was deeply saddened at learning of the death of Francis D. Burke on July 22, 2001; and

WHEREAS: Francis was a United States Army veteran; and

WHEREAS: Francis was a graduate of Babson College and Suffolk Law School; and

WHEREAS: Francis was former President of Vesper Properties, Inc. and Hemenway Management, Inc. and Senior Vice President of Cannon; and

WHEREAS: Francis was former President and Board member of the National Housing and Rehabilitation Association, Chairman of the Board of Utility Marketing Corporation; and

WHEREAS: Francis was a member of the Hatherly Golf Club, the Scituate and Indian Creek Country Club in Florida; and

WHEREAS: Francis’s passing will leave a void in the lives of all his surviving family, his wife Joan (Riley) Burke; his children Kathleen Burke Howie, Mary Burke Roth, Lynne Burke Lahive, Christine Burke Jones, Denise Burke Brisbane, and Ann, Joan and Michael Burke; his brother James Burke; his sister Mary Fadden; and his grandchildren Alix, Christina, Nicholas, Madison, Mackenzie and Lilly; and

WHEREAS: Francis will be sorely missed by all he touched and loved; now therefore be it

RESOLVED: That this City Council go on record extending its deepest sympathy to the family of Francis D. Burke at this time of such personal loss; and be it further

WHEREAS: In honor of the city of Gaeta, the city of origin of many Cambridge families, and the wonderful S.S. Cosmas e Damian Celebration which has come to Cambridge from Gaeta, the City Council has dedicated the corner of Warren Street and Porter Street "Gaeta Square;" and

WHEREAS: As part of the 75th Anniversary Celebration of the Feast of S.S. Cosmas e Damian, Gaeta Square will be rededicated on September 8, 2001; now therefore be it

RESOLVED: That the City Council go on record congratulating all of the organizers, supporters and participants of the annual S.S. Cosmas e Damian festival on the rededication of Gaeta Square and the 75th anniversary of this unique and truly wonderful Cambridge festival; and be it further
