Course Description: This course follows the New York State Common Core Syllabus for writing, reading, speaking, and listening skills in the Language Arts. The study of literature and the practice of analytical, expository, and persuasive writing will be intensive. With the literature, the focus will be on learning to read critically and respond to the literature orally and in written form. In composition, we will move from the single-paragraph, to a five-paragraph “type” essay, working to improve development, organization, and style. Weekly vocabulary units will also be standard. Grammar, spelling, vocabulary, and usage rules will be applied in all written work. Reading selections will be from various genres of literature (poetry, short stories, plays, novels, autobiographies, and essays) and will be taken from both the course textbook and selected outside sources. Students will also be responsible for reading novels independently.

Supplies Needed:

• A 2 inch three ring binder

• tab dividers for the binder

• loose leaf paper

• 2 packs of post it notes, pens, pencils, highlighters

• a Google doc account

• earbuds

Grading Policy: Quarterly grades will be based on the following:

1. Compositions and book reports 40%

2. unit tests 20%

3. literature quizzes 20%

4. vocabulary quizzes 10%

5. short homework/classwork assignments 10%

Make-up Policy for Essays, Tests, and Quizzes: Any work missed as a result of absence must be made up within two days. I am available after school most days. Confirm with me on the day you plan to stay so I remain in my room at 2:15. This is the personal responsibility of the student. If you were present on the day an essay or other assignment was assigned but absent on the due date, the essay will be expected on the day of your return. When you return from an absence, you are responsible for getting all assignments the following day and turning them in the next class meeting. Also, if a student schedules a time to make up work with the instructor and does not show up, a grade of zero will be given.

Music Students: If a student has a music lesson or scheduled music event during English class, the student should stop by and notify me before class. Students will be responsible to write down classwork and homework at that time. All work is expected to be complete for the next class day. Homework that is not complete for the next class day is considered late.

If a student cuts class, or is absent because of truancy, as per the student handbook: the student WILL NOT BE ALLOWED TO MAKE UP ANY WORK, AND WILL RECEIVE A ZERO for anything that was due that day.

Late assignments: Assignments will be accepted one day late with a penalty of TEN points. Short assignments (vocabulary homework, for example) will be accepted one day late for half credit. They will not be accepted after that.

Extra Credit: Extra credit assignments will be offered (at the discretion of the instructor) only to those students who have completed all course work within the specified time limits.

Vacations: If your son/daughter is going to miss school due to a vacation, work will be given to your son/daughter before he/she leaves and will be expected the day he/she returns

Academic and Behavioral Expectations:

1. Carefully complete all of the writing assignments and actively engage in the peer editing and revising stages of the writing process.

2. Complete all of the reading assignments thoughtfully and come to class prepared to discuss and question the reading. Participation in class discussion is a crucial part of the course. Participation sometimes means simply listening to others carefully. Remember: you are not always required to speak, but you are always expected to listen.

3. Report to class on time with supplies, required books, and with a positive attitude.

4. Treat all individuals in the class with respect.

5. Show respect for school and personal property.

6. Be reasonable and friendly. I do my best.

7. Follow the rules of the classroom with both the instructor and any substitute teacher.

8. You will be required to have your agenda in class and will not be allowed into class late or be allowed to leave class without an agenda pass. Your agenda is to be used daily to keep track of assignments; therefore, it should be kept intact throughout the year.

9. CELL PHONES ARE TO EITHER BE LEFT IN YOUR LOCKER, OR PLACED IN THE CELL PHONE HOLDER IN THE FRONT OF THE CLASSROOM. PHONE ARE NOT TO BE USED OR PLACED ON THE DESK.

Ethical Policy: All work must be your own. If you are caught cheating in any form (copying work, using someone else’s answers, or plagiarizing), you will receive a “0” for the assignment or test, and your parents will be contacted. If it occurs a second time, the matter will be dealt with by the principal, and further disciplinary action will be taken.

Parent Portal: Grade will be posted to the parent portal as the school year’s quarters dictate.

Teacher Availability: I am available after school most days. Confirm with me the day you plan to stay so I remain in my room at 2:15.

English Regents Exam: The New York State Common Core examination is a state assessment that is a requirement for graduation in New York State. The exam involves reading comprehension and analytical writing. Throughout the year, you will receive ample practice on all components of the exam.
