General Marking Guidance
All candidates must receive the same treatment. Examiners must mark the first candidate in exactly the same way as they mark the last.
Mark schemes should be applied positively. Candidates must be rewarded for what they have shown they can do rather than penalised for omissions.
Examiners should mark according to the mark scheme not according to their perception of where the grade boundaries may lie.
There is no ceiling on achievement. All marks on the mark scheme should be used appropriately.
All the marks on the mark scheme are designed to be awarded. Examiners should always award full marks if deserved, i.e. if the answer matches the mark scheme. Examiners should also be prepared to award zero marks if the candidate's response is not worthy of credit according to the mark scheme.
Where some judgement is required, mark schemes will provide the principles by which marks will be awarded and exemplification may be limited.
When examiners are in doubt regarding the application of the mark scheme to a candidate's response, the team leader must be consulted.
Crossed out work should be marked UNLESS the candidate has replaced it with an alternative response.

Question number 1 (a)
Answer
Additional guidance
An answer that combines the following points of understanding to provide a logical description:
Mark (2)
named force (acting at a distance) e.g.
(1)
magnetic
situation (1)
force between two (magnetic) poles
Question number 1 (b)(i)
Answer
rearrangement of work = force ? distance to give distance = work ? force (1)
substitution and evaluation (1) 18 (m)
Question number 1 (b)(ii)
Answer 2700 (J)
Additional guidance Mark (2)
seeing 2700 ? 150
Award full marks for correct answer without working
Mark (1)
Question number 1 (b)(iii)
Answer
rearrangement of KE = ? mv2
v = (2 ? KE ? m) (1)
substitution and evaluation (1)
19 (m/s)
Additional guidance Mark
(2)
v = (2 ? 2700 ? 15) v2 = (2 ? 2700 ? 15)
allow answers that round to 19
award full marks for correct answer without working
allow alternative route using v2 - u2 = 2ax for full marks
Question number 1 (c)
Answer
An answer that combines points of interpretation/evaluation to provide a logical description:
Additional guidance
Mark (2)
efficiency increases (at first) (1)
to maximum efficiency (for mass e.g. decreases for
of about 25 kg) (1)
larger masses
(Total for Question 1 = 9 marks)
Question number 2 (a)
Answer substitution into P = V ? I (1) 2600 = 230 ? I
Additional guidance
Substitution and rearrangement in either order
rearrangement (1)
I = P ? V
I = 2600 ? 230 for 2 marks
evaluation (1)
11 (A)
allow answers that round to 11
award full marks for correct answer without working
allow I = 2.6 ? 230 for 1 mark allow 0.011 (A) for 2 marks max
if no other marks scored, award 1 mark for 2.6 kW = 2600 W
Mark (3)
Question Answer number
2 (b)(i) either power = (current)2 ? resistance OR
P = I2 ? R
Mark (1)
Question number 2 (b)(ii)
Answer
substitution into P = I2 ? R (1)
55 = 4.42 ? R
rearrangement (1)
R = P ? I2
Additional guidance
Substitution and rearrangement in either order
Mark (3)
R = 55 ? 4.42 for 2 marks
evaluation (1) 2.8 ()
allow answers that round to 2.8
award full marks for correct answer without working
allow alternative route V = P ? I = 55 ? 4.4
then R = V ? I = 12.5 ? 4.4
(Total for Question 2 = 7 marks)
Question number
3(a)
Answer
An answer that combines points of interpretation/evaluation to provide a logical description: Use of lubrication / oil (1) To reduce friction (between parts) (1)
Mark (2)
Question number 3(b)
Answer
C a javelin moves through the air after leaving an athlete's hand
Mark (1)
Question number 3(c)
Answer
An explanation identifying the fact that the forces shown are acting on two different bodies / they are not acting on the same body (1)
Mark (1)
Question number 3(d)(ii)
Answer
drawing shows a completed triangle or parallelogram (1)
Additional guidance
Mark (2)
Evaluation 3.6 N (1)
?0.2 N may be calculated using Pythagoras theorem
Question number 3(d)(i)
Answer
