Hyde’s first win dents

Alderley Edge lead

AFTER failing to win their first nine ECB Premier League games, Hyde finally came good on Saturday with a decisive six wickets victory on the ground of reigning champions and current leaders Alderley Edge.

Alderley were bowled out for 120 (Alan Day 49), by Jason Whittaker, 4-45 and spinner Dan Cranmer who enjoyed a remarkable late spell of 4-4-0-3. Dave Fitzsimmons made sure there would be no slip up after tea with a typically breezy 76 out of 123-4 off 71 balls including 13 boundaries. Watch Hyde move up-table, especially after reaching the Last 16 in the National knock out on Sunday (see page 12).

Their defeat reduces Alderley’s lead to nine points ahead of ever-dangerous Chester Boughton Hall, whose sixth win was by 105 runs at home to Toft. Recovering from 153-7, Chester eventually posted 245-8, thanks to lower order batsmen Jack Williams, 59 not out and skipper Ross Dixon, 27. For Toft, Tom Forster took 4-65. Toft were bowled out for 140, James Drummond, 74 and his dad Toby, 30 adding 88 for the seventh wicket to no avail. CBH’s bowling hero was again veteran groundsman Alex Kegg who took a ‘fivefer’ the second week running, this time 5-25.

Hearty congratulations to Alex who reaches the ripe old age of 50 on July 1 and will immediately accept an invitation to play for Cheshire’s struggling Over 50s team

Bowdon prop up table

The league table shows Bowdon – last season’s runners-up - in 12th place, not surprisingly considering their continuing batting collapses. They were bowled out for their lowest tally yet - 57 - by Cheadle at South Downs Road. James McDougall scored 22, followed by 10 colleagues with single figures. Dan Brown was their destroyer with 6-24 from 15 lethal overs. Cheadle had batted before tea for a modest 121, Richie Nicholson 31 (followed by eight single figure scores). Dewi Jones took 3-34 and Chris Ashling 3-48. This was Bowdon’s fourth double figure tally in 10 games.

The three remaining matches produced draws, the tightest finish being between Timperley and Neston, Timperley posting 238-9 (Chris Canning 66 not out, Ash Davis 3-82). Neston got close at 234-9, Simon Stokes 54, David Hurst 49, last pair James Claxon and Chris Finegan putting on 18 in a vain bid for victory.

Bramhall v Didsbury was also close, the visitors batting well to post 263-8, Tim Hughes’ 102 being his second century in three days, Luke Littlewood taking 5-52. Bramhall got to 215-8 in response, Adam Wilde 61, Nick Cantello 59.

Nantwich emerged with a winning draw at home to Grappenhall after posting 203 batting first, Niall O’Brien 39, Albert Pennington 6-68. Grappers’ last pair were together at the close at 198-9, Owen Lynch 88, man of the match Pennington scoring 56 and Jimmy Warrington taking 3-49 (see page 3).

DIVISION 1: Oulton 22 points ahead

THERE’S no stopping Oulton Park in Division One, their eight wickets victory at Sale taking them 22 points clear at the top.

Sale were demolished for 96. opener Joe Cannon contributing 41, Muhammed Kashif taking 5-18 and Andy Hards 3-33. Danny Leech, 37 not out and Martin East, 3l lead the way in Oulton’s reply of 97-2.

Bollington nudged up to second place with an impressive bowling display at Davenham, who suffered their second successive defeat. On a lively pitch, Bolly were held to a tally of 156 (Rick Hough 26), principally by Robin Taylor, with 5-53. The visiting bowlers then turned up trumps to dismiss the last Davenham batsman at 149, number nine Dan Hancock’s sturdy 46 just failing to win the day. Bolly’s match-winner was new super-quick Barbadian Dario Searle with 4-28, helped by Joe Roddis 3-25.

Oxton’s promotion hopes took a knock when they lost by four wickets at Urmston after mustering only 137, Pat Magann 50, Dominic Ashling 5-58. Chris Turner top-scored with 47 as Urmies went on to register their second successive 25-pointer.

Another club in the promotion firing line, Widnes emerged with a losing draw at Macclesfield. Rob Porter, 77 and Peter Barron 60 helped Macc reach a useful 247-9, Marcus Fourie 5-60. Widnes replied with 215-9, Chris Kirby and Matt Burns both scoring 35, while John Birchall claimed 4-58, and Rob Porter 4-65.

Definitely on the up are Marple who edged into fifth place with a seven wickets win at Upton, who were restricted to 196-5, Neil Cross 58, Dan Owen 50. Marple’s fourth wicket pair James Morgan 77 and skipper Paul Wood, 73, put on a crucial 152 in an unbroken fourth wicket partnership as Marple closed on 197-3

Warrington registered their second victory, against wooden spoonists Weaverham at Walton Lea after dismissing their visitors for 108, then responding with a sticky 109-8.

DIVISION 2: Barrow first to 200 points

BARROW became the first club in the league to top 200 points when they won their seventh Second Division game by four wickets at Stockport.

The Cale Green men posted 185-8, Aiden van Eeden 80 not out, Iro De Silva 4-47, to which Barrow replied with 189-6 in 40 overs, De Silva 41, Andy Metcalfe 41 not out, Macca Harrison-Hooton 32.

Second placed Lindow fell 27 points behind when they lost their second game, by 51 runs at Alvanley. Their hosts ran up 187-6, Simon Gee 97 not out, Ryan O’Brien 3-52, before Lindow were hustled out for 136, Liam Castello 34, Ben Tyler 34.

Top scorers of the day were Brooklands, who hammered the Northwich bowlers for 292-4 at Moss Farm, skipper A.J. Hart contributing 119 and Kevin Carroll 43. Northwich’s reply reached 188, Luke Tapsfield 41, Lee Evans 38, Rob Leach emerging the the match-winner with 6-55.

Christleton continued their upsurge with a 46 runs win at Bredbury St. Mark’s the only club in the league yet to register a win. Christleton posted 256, Joshua Joseph 77, Atif Bajwa 61, Nick O’Connell 50, John Usher 5-76. Bredbury batted well, but were all out for 210, Rick Keyworth 52, Matt Astbury taking 5-64 and Joshua Joseph 4-46.

New boys Romiley continue to do well and their latest victory, at Cheadle Hulme, was achieved by five wickets. The Grove Park men mustered only 76, opener Mobashir Hasan contributing 49 followed by 10 single figure scores against M. D’Souza’s unplayable 6-31. David Badrock, 31 not out, led Romiley’s successful reply of 78-5.

Tattenhall registered their second victory, by one wicket in a tight finish at Mobberley who totalled 145 batting first, Nick Butters 38, Stuart Sadler 3-14, Mel Dobson 3-34. Sadler, 43, was the keystone of Tatters’ response of 148-9 against Mohammed Alam 4-27 and Younis Khan 3-27.
