2017 SEASON: NEWSLETTER NO. 7 – JUNE 3

First defeats for Toft & Alderley as Timperley go top

FIRST defeats of the season for Toft, at home to Nantwich, and for reigning champions Alderley Edge at Chester saw Timperley leapfrog to the top of the ECB Premier League thanks to a victory at Cheadle.

Timperley’s fifth win was earned by their bowlers Chris Page (5-30) and Rudolf Brenner (3-19) as they bowled Cheadle out for 125 after tea, Matt Wells top-scoring with 35.

Earlier, Timperley had relied on a sound knock of 53 from Abhishek Kulkarni and 38 by the prolific Grant Hodnett to reach a modest tally of 165, Josh Dooler taking 4-47 and Will Holmes 3-58.

Minus key man Rob Jones, Toft’s batting collapsed at home to Nantwich, Andrew Jackson, 43 being top scorer in a below par tally of 124, the two Ollies, Griffiths 5-24 and Freckingham 3-53 doing the damage. Nantwich replied with a comfortable 125-2, Henry Dobson 52 and Irish international Niall O‘Brien 51 not out.

Chester recover

Alderley Edge were roundly outplayed at Chester Boughton Hall who, it seems, can beat any opposition on their day. CBH recovered from 17-4 to close on 251-9 after a cracking sixth wicket stand of 144 between Lee Dixon, 112 (132 balls, 19 fours) and Ollie Law, 59. Best Alderley bowlers were Aussie Hamish Winter-Irving, with 3-55 and Richard Wilkinson 3-75. Alderley had no answer after tea to the sharp leg spin of Jack Williams, who claimed 6-48, falling to 152 all out, Khalid Sawas 78.

Neston were the day’s top scorers, an innings of 256-6 forming the base of a 15 – 7 points draw against Didsbury at Parkgate. Skipper Simon Stokes hit 144 (21 fours and two sixes), Luke Camden, 38 and David Hurst 37. Didsbury replied with 242-9, Jack Rudd 96, Simon Normanton 62, while Chris Finegan was rewarded for some admirable toil with 5-40.

Grappenhall inflicted further misery on bottom of the table Bowdon with a four wickets win at Broad Lane. This was after their visitors had come up with an improved 237-6, Jack Tipton 62, Carl Hey 51, Sam Guest 4-40. Grappers went on to win comfortably at 238-6, Luke McCoy 93, Gaz Burns 48, Adam Roylance 41.

Hyde remain the only club without a victory, although they almost managed it in a drawn game against Bramhall at Werneth Low. Hyde scored 255, Tom Partridge 60, Ashley West 3-21, after which Bramhall held out at 203-9, thanks to Simon Wilkinson, 38 not out and Rupes Kitzinger, seven not out, putting together 36 for the last wicket to claim a minor share of the honours.

Davenham lead in Division 1

DAVENHAM took the lead in the First Division thanks to another impressive performance at Urmston which earned them an 84-run victory.

After Davenham had rattled up 200-7, Peter Gallichan 61, Urmston were bowled out for 116, Lewis Jackson 61, Ben Gough 4-41, David Hancock 3-13, Robin Taylor 3-27.

Oxton are second after a nine wicket win in the Wirral against Warrington which started at noon and finished in mid-afternoon. By which time they had bowled Warrington out for 135, Liam Heaphy 48, Pat Magann 3-27, Richard Fennah 3-37, responding with a confident 139-1, Dane Williams hitting an unbeaten 76 off 81 balls, putting on 130 for the second wicket with Jamie Crawley, 52.

Widnes suffered their first defeat since promotion when they were outplayed at up and coming Oulton Park. Skipper Pat Roberts hit the division’s only century with 116 out of a tally of 205, Marcus Fourie 4-40. Widnes were then bowled out for 103, Fourie 42, Martin East 3-9.

Bollington won their well-attended home derby match against Macclesfield by a comprehensive seven wickets margin after bowling their visitors out for 177, Peter Barron 44, Jack Ward 4-39, Stuart Plant 3-40. Bolly responded with 181-3, Rick Hough again carrying his bat for 97, aided by Nathan Edgar 52.

Marple moved up table with a nine wickets victory at Weaverham who mustered only 65 against the attack of Pat Morahan, 4-37 and Andy Greasley, 7-4-7-3. Rob McMillan contributed a stout 34, but all other Wallerscote road batsmen failed to reach double figures. Marple completed a nine wicket win at 66-1, in the 10th over.

Sale were bowled out for a season’s lowest League tally of 41 at Upton by Liam Sundve who had the remarkable figures of 10-7-8-6. Extras (12) was Sale’s best contributor, none of their batsmen attaining double figures. Upton batted first totalling 196-6, with Chris McArthur 93 not out.

Barrow & Lindow set Division 2 pace

BARROW and Lindow continue to set the pace at the top of Division Two, both with five victories.

Barrow beat Romiley by four wickets at The Croft after restricting their visitors to 175-9, Tom Rolph 59, Iro De Silva 6-58, then replying with 176-6, Alex Reid 60.

Lindow ended Stockport’s good run with a four wickets home success, holding the Cale Green men to 161-9, then coming up with a solid 163-6.

Northwich continued their improvement with an eight wicket win at bottom club Bredbury. St. Mark’s were bowled out for 106, Joe Walker claiming 4-9 off 14 balls and Andy Dufty 4-27. Mark Walker’s side replied with 107-2, Luke Tapsfield 67 not out.

There was a wonderful all-round performance by Shavaiz Saif in Christleton’s 108-run home win over Mobberley. Saif top-scored with 87 from just 39 balls (eight fours and six sixes) in Christleton’s tally of 237-9. Then he took 6-47 to help bowl Mobberley out for 129, Mark Goodstadt 54.

Alvanley won by 53 runs at Tattenhall after posting an average 142, Stephen Charles 51, Mel Dobson 5-31. Tatters were bowled out for 89, Dobson remaining unbeaten with 30 batting at 10. Billy Ouzounidis took 3-15 and Chris Charles 3-25.

Brooklands emerged with winning draw points from their home game against Cheadle Hulme. Brooklands totalled 228-7, Ali Buchan 82, before the Grove Park men came up with 215-8, Jordan Potts contributing a splendid 97.

Early exit for Toft

PREMIER League leaders Toft made an early exit from the Joseph Holt T20 when they lost their second group game, by eight wickets at home to Bollington for whom Jack Roddis took 4-18.

In the same group Alderley Edge won at Macclesfield by 45 runs, Calum Rowe 73, blocking further progress for the Silkmen.

Timperley won by 10 wickets at Mobberley in Group 4, despite an unbeaten 91 from Nick Butters. For Timperley Rudoph Brenner scored 80 not out and took 2-12.

Holders Bramhall beat Stockport by eight wickets and are looking good in Group 7, where Cheadle edged home by six runs against Cheadle Hulme.

In Group 10, Marple won well at Romiley, while Bredbury St. Mark’s cried off their short trip up the hill to Hyde.

O All queries should be directed to Competition secretary Geoff Wellsteed, who reminds clubs of the new ruling which allows games unplayed due to rain to be mutually re-arranged within six days. If that is not achievable, both teams receive one point.

NEWS FROM AROUND THE GROUNDS

Paul Agar Scoreboard opened

THE Paul Agar Electronic Scoreboard was formally opened at Warrington Sports Club on Sunday by the club groundsman himself, who has put in 60 years of service.

The ceremony was conducted by president Ian Buttress, who praised Paul for his dedication since joining in 1957, both as a player and now head groundsman.

Many former players and officials of the club attended the ceremony which was followed by a luncheon.

Praise for Tatters’ Alex Sandland

TATTENHHALL chairman Alex Sandlands appeared on a short list of 11 for a Community Champion award set up by The Cricketer Magazine.

The aim was to reward the fine work done by administrators off the field in club cricket and their short-list included Alex Sandland. He was nominated by Stuart Sadler who writes: “He put the club on the map. From a village club of modest stature Tattenhall is now not only competitive in the Cheshire County League, but has hosted Lashings, a 3-day Cheshire Minor Counties match and this summer will host games in the Learning Disability Tri-Series between England, Australia and South Africa.”

The winners’ prize was a trip to London to ring the five minute bell at Lord’s to start the England v South Africa ODI played on May 29.

Flintoff back at ‘Edge

THERE will be a gathering of some of England’s 2005 Ashes heroes at Alderley Edge on Thursday, July 13 when Freddie Flintoff and some ex-England colleagues take on the host club in a charity game.

Flintoff, who made several appearances for Alderley last season and lives locally, will be leading Freddie’s Ashes Legends in a T20 game, the money going to help fight Prostate Cancer and towards the club’s Junior Academy, where the sons of Freddie and another former England captain, Michael Vaughan, currently play.

Aussie club seek UK player next winter

MELBOURNE-based club Clifton Hill are seeking a good all-round club cricketer to play in the McGibbon Shield competition this winter.

Clifton Hill, who have fielded 10 previous players from the UK, is situated a 10 minutes car drive from the MCG. They play in the high standard Eastern Cricket Association on a synthetic pitch, with six senior and 10 junior teams.

Further information including details of a remunerative package can be obtained from Vice president Paul Connors by e-mail on pconnors37@.

Umpire’s quiz: by Alistair Davies

QUESTION 5: The team batting second in a limited over match need seven runs to win with one ball remaining after the bowler’s end and striker’s end umpires had both called No ball for the previous delivery. If that final delivery is hit for six runs, what is the result of the match?

ANSWER: The result of the match is a Tie. With the six hit, the scores will be level and the match is over (NB: There is only one no ball to be counted for the previous delivery). Laws 24.12, 21.5 (a).

QUESTION 6: The striker dances down the pitch in an attempt to hit the ball on the full. He misses the ball completely and it is gathered by the wicket-keeper in front of the wicket and brought back onto the stumps with the striker still out of his ground. There is an appeal - what should be the upshot?

Heaton Mersey remember Simon Humpage

HEATON Mersey chairman Tim Humpage is planning a 20th anniversary Charity Walk to mark the death from cancer in 1997 of his brother Simon.

Tim, his younger brother and former player Ben, together with 3rd XI captain Sanjay Shah and committeeman Charlie Gilluley plan their 13 miles walk from Heaton Mersey to the ground of their opponents Prestbury in a UKFast Cheshire League game on Saturday, June 10, with the proceeds going to Cancer Research.

Anyone wishing to offer their support should go to the justgiving page link which is: http:Prestbury-perambulation?utm_id=3D121.

Tim concludes: “If anyone who remembers Simon would like to support a good cause with a fiver that would be wonderful”.

Tim’s father is David Humpage, the County League chairman.
