As promised attached are parts of the level system that some of you asked for yesterday.  I am compiling a list of web pages for you and your students and I will also send powerpoint presentations for various lessons too…so clear out your mailbox!

• Don’t forget to sign up for and , its free and is useful in all subjects areas. Also look at , , there are free resources that cover all subject areas too.

•    is also great for reinforcing math concepts, it has limited use if you are not a member but it gives you access to about 25-30 problems/per day to practice with as a group.  My kids love it.

• General Ed uses Glencoe Mathematics and it has CDs.  Contact your Math department and see if someone can burn you a copy of Teacher Works and Interactive Lessons for each grade.

• Check with your Science Department for EduSmart Science 2012 TEKS Edition (6th-8th) software and get someone to download it onto your computer, it’s interactive and a great for reinforcing lessons.

• Also, get permission to look in your bookroom.  You’d be shocked at what is stored in there.  I found some awesome material last year when they were cleaning it out.  General Ed doesn’t use everything that is shipped to them and there is a ton of stuff our kids can benefit from.

• Check with your librarian for DVDs: School House Rock, all subjects ($10 at Best Buy if they don’t have it) and The Liberty Kids, for US History.

I hope this will be helpful to you.  Have a GREAT YEAR!  Audrey Harris, Pershing M.S.

End of the School Year Projects

Good afternoon,

Below is a list of activities you can do with your students.  They have educational twist.

Life Skills Activities

Life Skills – Crock Pot Applesauce

Teach the story of Johnny Appleseed.  Students can practice measurement and comprehension.

Newspaper Kite

Students can practice math skills and following directions.

Poetry Notebook

The different poems require dictionary use, grammar, spelling, editing, etc.

Grassland Biome Cake

Science skills.

Dream House

Students have to draw a floor plan for their dream house, label and find the area of each room, and then go shopping for carpet, furniture, etc. for their house.  Students can use magazine and newspaper pictures, etc.

Alka Seltzer Rockets

(You can get empty film canisters from ---one-hour photo ---Wal-mart ---photo shops)

This is an outside project. Fuji film canister – the kind where the lid fits inside the canister. The others don’t work.

1. Optional: Make a cone and tape it to the top of the canister.

2. Fill the film canister ½ full with warm water.

3. Put in ¼ tablet of Alka Seltzer – no more

4. Snap the lid tightly into the canister, turn it over on a hard surface and stand back. The lid is on the hard surface. The sodium bicarbonate will make the canister launch into the air. If you vary the temperature of the water, your rocket will shoot to different heights. The warmer the water, the higher it will go.

This was a fun and educational projects.

Student Teach The Class

You can have students teach their favorite lessons from the school year. You will provide your students with a list of concepts covered this year and allow them to choose one (they can work with a partner). They will then plan a 10-15 minute lesson on that concept. You will get them whatever supplies they need to use. This will be their "review" for a test at the end of the week that covers the entire year. It will take 2-3 days for each group to have their turn at being "Teacher for the Day".

Create a Commercial

Host a class competition where students cast a vote, and give an award to the team that produces the most clever, creative 30-second advertisement. Decide first as a class on the product to be pitched (plan, design, critique).

On Campus Field Trip

Take students outside to write observational notes on what they see through the eyes of a scientist, historical figure, artist, a character from a book or film (discover, examine, report).

Create a class scrapbook.

Let each student make a page. Offer some prompts (My favorite book we read…/The best experiment we did in Chemistry…/One thing I learned about myself…) and encourage students to include favorite class memories. Supplement with photos of students, the classroom, or class activities. Make a copy of the scrapbook for every student, or make an electronic scrapbook and take the opportunity to teach students how to use PowerPoint or another program.

Have Students Write Letters to Themselves

Ask your students to write themselves a letter, reviewing the year and making “resolutions” for the next school year. Give them some prompts to write about: one thing they are proud of from this year, one thing they would like to do differently next year, one thing they want to remember, and so on. You can either mail these letters to your students just before the start of the next school year, or make arrangements with their next teachers to distribute the letters at the start of school.

I hope this helps!

Sincerely,

Tiffany Willie
