Men’s Soccer: Hawks Tie 2-2 at home to Irvine Valley in OEC game;

Winless streak is nine, but SCC gets tying goal twice as IVC plays short-handed in final 25 minutes.

Coming up with the game-tying goal twice, the Santiago Canyon College (SCC) men’s soccer team settled for a 2-2 tie at home with the defending state champion Irvine Valley College (IVC) Lasers Friday afternoon (Oct. 8) in an Orange Empire Conference (OEC) battle at the SCC Soccer Field in Orange.

Trailing, 1-0, SCC freshman forward Ivan Cruz (Troy H.S.) went into the IVC 18-yard box with the ball on a breakaway, but was met by IVC sophomore goalkeeper Joe Ascona (Mission Viejo H.S.) who curled a forearm around Cruz’ neck and was whistled for a red card. After Ascona was ejected, sophomore backup goalkeeper Kevin Capps (El Toro H.S.) went in to play between the goal posts for IVC as he awaited the penalty kick from freshman forward-midfielder Vince Case (El Dorado H.S.). Case’s sent a low line drive shot just inside the left goal post and tied the game at 1-1.

With IVC now playing one man short for the final 25 minutes, it was just starting to get interesting.

Four minutes later, freshman defender Sean Keefe (Mission Viejo H.S.) headed the ball into the goal from four yards out off a cross from the right side by freshman midfielder Steve Wulff (Villa Park H.S.).

In the 83rd minute, SCC freshman midfielder Benjamin Inouye (Hilo, HI H.S.) shot from about 12 yards out. Capps made the initial save, but the ball ricocheted out to freshman midfielder Garrett Smith (Edison H.S.) who blasted it into the net from 25 yards out to tie the game at 2-2.

“At least they (the Hawks) didn’t give up,” said third-year SCC head men’s soccer coach Dave McLeish. “Hopefully, we can turn this around. Garrett Smith did very well in controlling the midfield and (freshman sweeper) Jeff Minder (Corona H.S.) did an outstanding job in the backfield.”

SCC sophomore goalkeeper John Timoti (Edison H.S.) went the distance and finished with only three saves, but intercepted or batted away no less than six crosses. Ascona – who played the first 65 minutes – had five saves and Capps – who allowed both goals – finished with three saves.

With the tie, though, SCC saw its winless streak reach nine games.

After today, both teams will continue OEC action on Tuesday, Oct. 12. SCC will visit the Norco campus of Riverside Community College for a 3 p.m. kickoff while IVC will host Golden West College at 3 p.m.
