Possible themes could include, but are not limited to: (a) the struggle and beauty of maturing through education, (b) the belief in owning your learning and your education, (c) overcoming adversity to pursue your dreams, (d) the retreat into fantasy and delusion to mitigate the harshness of the real world, or perhaps (e) the subjectivity of personal memory about family history. EligibilityThe contest is open to undergraduate students enrolled full-time (minimum 12 hours) at Sam Houston State University in the fall 2019 semester who have read the SHSU Common Reader book. PrizeScholarships valued at $250 each will be awarded to: (a) one first-time first-year student and (b) one other full-time student submitting the winning poems/lyrics. $250 scholarshipFirst-time first-year winner$250 scholarshipOther full-time student winnerApplicationEssays must be submitted by 4:00 pm, Monday October 21, 2019, to the Academic Success Center at asc@shsu.edu. All submissions must be electronic submissions, must include the cover letter below, and must be sent as email attachments (Microsoft Word documents, RTF files, or PDF files only). Rules of the ContestAll applicants must be students enrolled at Sam Houston State University full-time (minimum 12 hours) during the fall 2019 academic term.All poems/lyrics must be typed, single-spaced, on white, 8 ?” x 11” paper and free of any remarks or grade.All submissions must include the submission cover form information on the next page. The poem/lyric itself must not contain the student’s name since poems/lyrics will be evaluated anonymously. The cover form should be the first page of your poetry/lyric submission and does not count toward the word count in the poem/lyric. When submitting by email, please include all of the information on the cover sheet and the statement of authenticity in the body of your email. A student may submit only one entry.Winners will be notified by the Sam Houston State University Student Success Initiatives Office.There is no minimum length requirement.
