It is with great enthusiasm that I am writing to you to deliver the latest developments with SENSE. During the past year, SENSE has undergone a series of revisions. Level I – Entry Welder has been extensively revised and updated. The AWS Education Committee and the SENSE Subcommittee have completed revisions and approved the following changes/updates:

o Module 3: Drawing and Welding Symbol Interpretation *

o Module 4: Shielded Metal Arc Welding (SMAW)

o Module 5: Gas Metal Arc Welding (GMAW-S, GMAW Spray Transfer)

Other SENSE-related Education Committee projects:

• SENSE Welding Program Accreditation. SENSE training organizations will soon be able to have their SENSE-aligned welding program accredited through AWS. The accreditation process is anticipated for release in 2009.

The AWS Education Services Department is also working diligently to improve communications and services to SENSE training organizations. Some of the projects currently under development include:

• SENSE Survey 2008. A new survey for SENSE schools was developed to gather information on how schools are using the SENSE guidelines. The survey was launched in the Summer of 2008, and will run through 2009. To access survey, visit .

• Development of SENSE Workshop Series. These workshops will provide the basic information needed by instructors/facility representatives to successfully implement and apply SENSE to their welding programs. This series is not meant to define content, but will support implementation, application, assessment and SENSE certification.

• School Locator. The welding school locator on the AWS website now undergoes regular updates. Users may add or update schools to the locator using the online form. After adding/updating your schools’ information, please allow two to four weeks for the updates to be reflected on the website. To access the welding school locator, visit .

Please be sure to visit the AWS SENSE website to keep up-to-date on SENSE news and developments. To download new materials, you will need to use the user name and password provided by Education Services. All new information and resources are available on the SENSE Downloads Page .
