Summary

A survey of students' experience and opinions relative to CMU's General Education Program was administered in spring 2005. A random sample of 1000 on- and off-campus students received an email asking them to participate in the survey in March. Two reminders were sent out in April and the survey closed on May 2nd. 197 students completed the survey, yielding a 20% response rate, which is lower than had been hoped for. The survey was developed by the General Education Steering Committee to satisfy its charge to gather input on CMU's General Education Program. Questions in the survey were answered on ratings scales, with additional space in which students could explain their responses. Data for the General Education Opinion Survey has been captured electronically via an Office of Academic Affairs survey tool. All data for the survey was anonymous; there is no mechanism, nor has there been any attempt, to identify the individual contributor. The following document contains two sections: Section I includes Respondent Demographics data. Section II includes Perceptions about CMU's General Education Program data. All charts, graphs and interpretations reflect the survey results exactly as they were submitted by participants. Percentages have been rounded for spacing and general understanding reasons. Responses from open-ended questions were edited for vulgar language only. Readers are encouraged to review this report in its entirety to develop their own conclusions.
