A CONCURRENT RESOLUTION

TO WELCOME THE BROWN VS. BOARD OF EDUCATION COMMISSION AND ITS STAFF TO SOUTH CAROLINA ON ITS VISIT TO OUR STATE IN JUNE 2003 IN CONNECTION WITH THE CELEBRATION OF THE FIFTIETH ANNIVERSARY OF THIS LANDMARK UNITED STATES SUPREME COURT DECISION.

Whereas, the President and the Congress of the United States have created the Brown vs. Board of Education Fiftieth Anniversary Commission to celebrate this landmark judicial decision before and on its fiftieth anniversary on May 17, 2004; and

Whereas, South Carolina was among the original parties to the United States Supreme Court litigation that resulted in the desegregation of public schools in this nation, thereby laying the groundwork for further progress in civil rights in this State and in the nation; and

Whereas, Carolyn N. Sawyer and the Honorable Joseph A. DeLaine, Jr., are South Carolina’s two representatives on the commission by appointment of President George W. Bush; and

Whereas, the commission will visit South Carolina on June 3-5, 2003, for a series of public events; and

Whereas, the members of the General Assembly consider it a distinct honor and privilege to have this distinguished commission come to our State. Now, therefore,

Be it resolved by the House of Representatives, the Senate concurring:

That the members of the General Assembly, by this resolution, welcome the Brown vs. Board of Education Commission and its staff to South Carolina on its visit to our State in June 2003 in connection with the celebration of the fiftieth anniversary of this landmark United States Supreme Court Decision.

Be it further resolved that a copy of this resolution be forwarded to the commission.
