STRATEGIES:

• INTRODUCTION TO THE SUBJECT (SEE INSTRUCTOR NOTES, SECTION I).

• Use the California Career Center Course Planning Worksheet or your district’s course planning document.

• Have students access the “CalCC Course Planning Worksheet” per the directions in the Materials section above.

o NOTE: Currently, the CalCC Course Planning Worksheet cannot be saved in a student’s “My Stuff” account. Therefore, have students either complete this activity on a computer, save it, and then e-mail it to themselves or, if students’ computer access is limited, give them with a hard copy of the CalCC Course Planning Worksheet from which to work. CalCC “My Stuff” is being expanded and, sometime during the 2013-14 school year, students will be able to upload their planning worksheet to their “My Stuff” accounts.

• The students will fill out course titles on the worksheet using the internet resources listed in the “Materials” section and your guidance.

• Start with the first subject strand (History/Social Science).

• Have the students look at the Web page of their district/high school graduation requirements for the social science or history classes. Have them note the number of years required.

• Have the students check UC/CSU A-G Requirements for History/Social Science and compare this requirement with the district/school requirement. Explanations and clarifications for the subject area requirements may be found on the UC/CSU links listed above.

• Have students review the list of social science or history A-G courses at their school at the UC Doorways website (see Internet Resources above). This course list can be especially helpful when choosing courses to fulfill the “G” requirement.

• Instruct students to fill in the names of the courses they intend to take, guiding them as to grade level placement. Encourage them to incorporate the UC/CSU A-G Requirements on their Course Planning Worksheet for History/Social Science.

• Do the same process for the second subject strand, English/Language Arts.

• Repeat process until the worksheet is complete, students can then either save and e-mail the documents to themselves or save and print the hard copy.

• Closing statements (see Instructor Notes, Section II).

ESTIMATED TIME: 2 class periods

EVALUATION TOOL:

INSTRUCTOR NOTES ON

COURSE PLANNING

I. Introduction to the subject:

Now that your High School Putting It All Together worksheet has definite goals, you are going to create a plan where you will chart out specific school courses that will help you reach those goals. This course plan will be updated each semester as you make progress toward graduating from high school and review your post-secondary options.

II. Closing statements:

The courses you just chose may change as your interests develop and change. That is why you will be reviewing this with your school counselor twice a year to make sure you are on the right path to fulfilling your plans and goals with as many options as possible.

III. Collecting Results Data:

Process Data: Number of students who completed a Course Planning Worksheet.
