Life on the International Space Station

[pic]

Humans have been fascinated about exploring space for thousands of years. Science fiction movies and books have long fantasized about the day where humans may colonize (live permanently) on a different planet, like Mars. Though we aren’t there quite yet, we have made some incredibly important steps in that direction. In 1969, NASA sent the first human to the moon. In 1998, the International Space Station (ISS) was launched and is still orbiting the earth as we speak! It is an important area for scientists to continue to collect information about what space is like. But what is it like while living on the ISS?

First, you and your group will have to find out some information on what the International Space Station is all about! Use the following links to help you answer the question in the table on the next page.

Now to work on YOUR OWN...

You will be assigned a task where you will research a different part about life in the International Space Stations (ISS). Most of the information you will need can be found at spacestation/station/living.htm

(more kid friendly)

BUT, you may need to use your ‘google’ skills to find out extra information and get help with unknown vocabulary.

You will be assigned one of the following topics;

1. Space Suits

2. Sanitation in Orbit

3. Recreation and Sleeping

4. Eating in Space

Step 1:

Consider 2 questions of your own about the topic assigned. Write/type them down.

You will be asked to try and find the answer to your questions AS WELL AS finding the answers to some questions provided to you.

Step 2:

Find your topics questions below. Write/ type these questions and search for the answers on the website given at the top.

TOPIC 1: FOOD

• How has the food that astronauts eat changed over the last 50 years?

• What kinds of foods do astronauts eat in space today?

• Why do astronauts eat tortilla's instead of bread in space?

• What methods are used to prevent food from spoiling? Refrigerators?

• If you lived in space for a month, what foods do you think you would miss the most? Why?

• What are some examples of food eaten by the early Mercury & Gemini astronauts?

TOPIC 2: SPACE SUITS

• What are the main parts of a space suit? How do they work?

• Do astronauts have to wear the space suits all the time? Why or why not?

• What are some safety measures that are built into space suits?

• Do you think space suits are comfortable? Why or why not?

• Provide a list of 5 essential items that a spacesuit must have.

• What are 4 things you would face if you were to step outside a spacecraft without a spacesuit?

TOPIC 3: SANITATION

• How do astronauts shower and use the bathroom in space?

• Do they have to wash dishes or laundry?

• How do they keep their living quarters clean?

• What special sanitation issues do astronauts face that those of us on Earth don’t worry about?

• How do they clean their plates and eating utencils in space?

• What is done with the dirty clothes from astronauts? How often are you allowed to change clothes in space?

• Since you are in space, do astronauts have to worry about germs?  Explain.

TOPIC 4: SLEEP AND RELAXATION

• Do astronauts require more or less sleep than normal when they are in space?

• How long each day are astronauts required to exercise?

• How many hours of sleep do astronauts usually get each night?

• How do astronauts relax in space?

• Do astronauts sleep in a bed? If they do not, how do they sleep?

Once you have found all of the information about your topic, you will get back into your group and discuss what you have found with the rest of your group members. All members of the group will be responsible for knowing the answers to EACH of the questions, so you will need to e-mail them the answers.
