Research Tips

Popular Search Engines

• Google, Yahoo, Bing

o Web

o News

o Images – for visual aides only

Narrow your search down.

• Make sure you type in specifically what you are looking for. Using specific phrases and key words can help you narrow your search down and save you a lot of time.

• For example, if my speech is talking about the flu and I want to find out how much something costs, I might type, “cost of a flu shot.” You do not want to type in “flu” in the search engine because then you will get information other than what you are looking for.

Ideas on what to search.

• “Interesting facts about ____________”

• “Myths about ___________”

• “Personal stories about _____________”

• “__________ Statistics” …… “ __________ Numbers”

Printing

• Options when printing:

1. Printing everything from the website:

o Use the print friendly version (look for the printer icon).

2. Printing only some of the information from the website:

o Right click and highlight the information you want to print (drag the mouse), right click and select print, then when the printer box pops up, choose selection. Then you click print. This means it will only print the information you selected.

o Copy and paste information you want from the website into a Microsoft word document (I would do it only if the website has way too much information you do not want to print), make sure you include:

• Source (name of the organization or website)

• Date (if it is not at the top, check the bottom to see when it was copyrighted or when the website was last updated).

• URL (_____.com)

• Make sure to see how many pages your document it. Do not print if it is over 7 pages long. Be careful if you are printing from and online Encyclopedia (Wikipedia). They can be very long sometimes!

Sources that you do not want to use:

• Wikipedia (only if you are getting information to help you understand better)

• Yahoo or Wiki Answers (more of an opinionated website – anyone can make comments about the topic).

Endings to URL (website) addresses:

• .com = a company

• .net = a network

• .edu = an educational facility

• .org = an organization

• .mil = military

• .gov = government
