|Appropriate Grade Level: Upper Elementary – High School |

|Procedures/Steps: |

|Effective note taking is a strategy that will benefit students not only in reading comprehension, but in all subjects. |

|Many students do not have effective strategies for taking notes. |

|Students draw a vertical line about 2 inches from the left side of their paper |

|Label the left column “Main Ideas” and the right column “Details” |

|Main Ideas |

|In the “Main Ideas” column, include key words and main ideas from the text |

|In the “Details” column, write brief details pertaining to the key words and main ideas |

|At the bottom of the page, write a brief summary about the reading |

|Comments and/or tips: |

|Once students understand this strategy, teachers will no longer have to devote instructional time to teaching note taking. |

|Note taking is not only a way to record facts, it leads to deeper student engagement and reflection. |
