Topic #4: Research paper

Deforestation is a dangerous and un –reversible act of environmental destruction that has effected not only the existence of indigenous forests (tropical & rain) and woodlands, but also the entire earth. It continues to be a world wide problem between the countries that allow it and the environmentalists that try to prevent it. If the current rate of deforestation continues, rainforests will be extinct within a hundred years. (Vajpey p.29) Deforestation should be banned or have stricter laws not only because of the harm it causes, but because it also increases problems that can affect creatures, humans, and the planet.

Deforestation is the permanent destruction of precious forests (tropical & rain). It consists of cutting down, damaging, and burning them. It is a deadly and dangerous act of violence because it not only kills the forest but also the creatures and exotic plants that live in the rainforest.() In many cases, these rainforests are the only place where these creatures and plants can survive, in the world. It also destroys one of Earth’s natural beauties and causes a domino affect of harmful conditions to the planet that aren’t reversible.

At this present moment, rainforests and other forests cover only 21% of the Earth’s surface, as compared to five hundred years ago, when almost 45 to 55 % covered the surface.(main-vision) At least 12 million hectares of forests are destroyed annually and by the year 2050, the majority of forests will be lost. Countries such as the Ivory Coast, Costa Rica, Nigeria, and Sri Lanka will completely loose all of their tropical rainforests by the year 2010, five years form this present year, due to deforestation.

There are a number of reasons for deforestation. Causes of it are the development of cash crops and cattle ranching, which generate money for tropical countries; commercial logging, which supplies the world market with wood such as ebony, mahogany, and teak wood; competitive global economy, which drives the need for money: the population of people, which demands the construction of cities, towns, and dams, and other issues and conditions that need wood as part of its development and economy. (Smouts, p.17)

Another major fact to consider is the national debt of a country. For example, in 1995, Brazil had an international debt of 159 billion dollars, of which it had to make payments each year. The logging companies and other industries seek to harvest the forest so that they can sale the wood, in the forms of pulps and hardwood, such as ebony and mahogany. In many countries, wood becomes the most profitable item it can sale nationally and international, which helps them make money for special projects and develop there industry, as well.

Consequences of deforestation affect not only the creatures and exotic plants that live in the forest, but also the human species and the planet. In the biodiversity of the Earth, 5 to 80 million species of animals and plants live in tropical rainforests and with only 7% of rainforest covering Earth’s dry surface, these rain forests hold over half of all these species. Many of the plants and animals can only be found in these forests because they require its’ special condition or habitat to survive, which only the forests can provide. Thus this makes them vulnerable to deforestation and if it is destroyed, the plants and animals may become extinct. It is estimated that about 137 species of plants and animals disappear each day, in the world due to deforestation. (main-vision)

Another major consequence is the effect that deforestation has on the planet. For one, deforestation increases the amount of carbon dioxide and other gases into the atmosphere. The tropical rainforests contains about 460-575 billion tons of carbon dioxide worldwide. When it is cut or burned, the carbon is release into the atmosphere, and mixes with oxygen, as CO2. This enhances the Greenhouse Effect, which increases global temperature, thus affecting the climate.

Finally, deforestation changes the climate of the area that is being cut and burned because it reduces the evaporation cooling process that takes place between the plants and the soil. When the trees and plants are gone, the moist foundation of the forest quickly dries out. With the trees and plants no longer there to use the evaporation and evapotranspiration process to return water to the atmosphere, less clouds form and less rain occurs. Less evaporation means more heat from the sun, increasing the temperature.

Laws and treaties have been created to stop the spread of deforestation. One law that was formed to help protect tropical rain forest is known as Principle 21 or the Precautionary Principle. (Smouts, p.34)This insisted for countries and governments to prevent, anticipate, and attack the cause of environmental destruction. Thus, this would allow the development not to exceed its limits of destruction, causing future generations to suffer the effects of past deforestation, such as the Greenhouse Affect.

Another law that was created was the International Tropical Timber Agreement (ITTA). This law was established to be an agreement between the producers and the consumers, that sale and buy the products of the deforestation. This established the rules and regulations of rainforest wood trading. The main purpose of this law is to prevent the sale of extremely large amounts of rainforest wood. The effects of this would be great because it prevents desertificion, which is a non- developed forest that was a result of deforestation.

Other laws and treaties such as CBD (Convention of Biological Diversity), and the (FCCC) Framework Convention on Climate Control have also tried to limit and set rules against the amount of rain forest to be used for development and to be destroyed. They have brought to the forefront the problem of deforestation and along with environmentalist worldwide, have been aware of the long term affects of deforestation. (Smouts, p.56)

In conclusion, deforestation continues to be a major problem. It not only affects the human species, plants, and exotic animals, but also the Earth as well. There must be more steps taken or stricter laws made and enforced to help monitor and ultimately stop deforestation. If not, the future generations will suffer greatly the damage we have done now.

This is the web-site of the World Resource Intuition, which focuses on the way that we work together, do projects, pursue, and how we interact on the world’s most serious environmental threats. It is operated by President Jonathan Lash and is a non-profit organization that was created and founded in 1982. Its main focus was to be an information outlet and environmental information center about the seriousness of the condition of the planet.

This book is about deforestation and the effects it has on the surrounded culture, climate, economy, and its global impact. It details how deforestation is a deadly act that kills more then it helps and how money is made from the destruction of the tropical rainforest. It lists hypothesizes, facts, stats, and how limited the rainforest are today.
