Board of Directors Meeting

Date: Tuesday, March 10, 2020 Time: 7:30 PM "B" Building

General Meeting Date: Tuesday, March 24, 2020

Time: 7:30 PM "B" Building

From Board Member

Alan Kaplan

My name is Alan Kaplan and I serve on the board of directors of Delray Villas plat 4/5. I am now entering my third year on the board. One of my duties is serving on the Interview Committee with Bill Yesowitch. Over the past year, we have been the unofficial welcoming committee to new residents moving into our community. Many of our new neighbors are 55-60 years old and are working couples. I enjoy visiting these people after 30 days to make sure they have no issues.

I also serve on the Inspection Committee with Dennis Michalic. We ride through the neighborhood looking for violations. There are relatively very few, as most residents keep up their properties.

I also volunteer for the COP Program. You can see our patrol car driving through the community. It is very rewarding to see people waving at us and saying, "Thank You". We are advised by the Deputy Sheriffs that we have one of the lowest crime areas in our region. I have learned a lot serving on the board. They are a dedicated group of men and women.

From the Editor

Bonnie Wentz

In 2020, the spring equinox falls on Thursday, March 19. This event marks the astronomical first day of spring in the Northern Hemisphere. The word equinox comes from the Latin words for "equal night"--aequus (equal) and nox (night). On the equinox, the length of day and night is nearly equal in all parts of the world. This is the beginning of increasing sunlight hours, with earlier dawns and later sunsets.

Equinoxes are the only two times a year that the sun only rises due east and sets due west for all of us on Earth! After the spring equinox, the Norther Hemisphere tilts toward the sun, which is why we start to get longer, sunnier days.

According to folklore, you can stand a raw egg on its end on the day of the equinox. This egg folklore became popular in 1945 following a LIFE magazine article. The origins of this myth are attributed to stories that the ancient Chinese would create displays of eggs standing on end during the first day of spring. The ancient Chinese celebrated the first day of spring about six weeks earlier than the equinox, so it's not just on the equinox itself. As with most folklore, it's only partly true. Folklore or not, this egg trick sounded like fun to several Almanac editors. One spring, a few minutes before the vernal equinox, the editors tried this trick. For a full workday, 17 out of 24 eggs stood standing. Three days later, they tried this trick again and found similar results. Perhaps 3 days after the equinox was still too near. Perhaps the equinox has nothing to do with it. If you try this, plan on having some omelets!

Until next month, be happy and healthy.

the dormant season. To protect next seasons blooms, begin pruning after the last flowers fade, but before the new buds set. ? Add Epsom salts around roots on shrubs with magnesium deficiencies. ? Add mulch, as necessary, to minimize weeds and conserve moisture during the dry season. ? Check plants for insects, especially aphids on new growth.

MONTHLY MAINTENANCE REPORT

Can't believe that February is gone and we're heading into spring. The weather should start warming up soon and before you know it, summer will be here.

LAWN SPRAYING: We're finally done

fertilizing and spraying for dollar weed. We should be seeing results in a week or two. If the spraying doesn't seem to be working for you, please leave a note for Todd. We are still having a problem with someone taking the forms out of the mailbox, if you need to leave something for Todd and there is nothing in the box, just find Todd and he'll take care of your problem.

LAWN WATERING: This is not done on a

regular basis or time schedule. It's done a couple days after the lawn is cut to check for sprinkler head problems. Depending on the weather and the rain, it might be watered a couple more times during the month. Summertime watering is done on a regular basis, every other day, depending on the weather and the water reserve in the lake.

That's it for me. Have a nice March and you'll hear from us again next month.

Foster Children's Program for Palm Beach County

Submitted by Andrea and John McDonough

My husband and I recently became aware of a foster children's program for Palm Beach county which supplies suitcases for foster children. The suitcases are needed so children do not need to put their belongings in a trash bag. Along with the suitcases, which should be no larger than 24", including the wheels, they ask for a donation of a new stuffed animal.

Also, each child receives a handmade blanket. If you knit, crocket or quilt, donations would be appreciated.

If you have suitcases, stuffed animals, or handmade blankets which you would like to donate, you can drop them off at our home at:

6351 LaSalle Road

or call 508-654-1991

for pick up.

El Clair Ranch Road Closure

Construction will begin late January 2020 to replace the bridge over the L-30 Canal between Lake Ida Road and Flavor Pict Road. Motorists and pedestrians may detour via Flavor Pict Road, Via Delray Blvd., Lake Ida Road, and Jog Road as noted below.

Bridge will be demolished and replaced and a bike lane and sidewalk will be added, according to The Florida Department of Transportation.

Anticipated completion is Spring 2021.
