General Description

Armstrong Floor Products’ resilient vinyl floor manufacturing plant in South Gate, CA is seeking an EH&S professional with strong environmental skills to manage the plant’s EHS programs. This position serves as the subject matter expert and ensures that all aspects of production operations are compliant with internal and external EHS requirements and support our commitment to the manufacture and delivery of innovative, stylish and environmentally conscious products made by employees working in a safe and healthy environment.

Key job responsibilities

As a key member of the plant leadership team and supported by the divisional leadership from the corporate offices in Lancaster, PA, your work entails managing all EH&S activities such as:

Compliance

• Conduct site audits, evaluate plant’s compliance with environmental regulations and identify areas of improvements

• Implement environmental solutions and drive changes in manufacturing processes / systems that lead to reduction in environmental waste streams

• Lead investigations on environmental non-compliance incidents and provide urgent response to operational issues

• Provide project support for corporate EH&S initiative in areas of reduction of energy usage, greenhouse gas emissions and water use management

• Manage the plant’s safety and industrial hygiene programs and ensure compliance with internal and external safety and health regulations and policies

Training

• Lead plant environmental and safety training programs

• Provide technical expertise to plant personnel on key governmental regulations pertaining to environment, health and safety

EHS Program Administration

• Manage plant’s environmental and OSHA regulatory reporting and record keeping requirements

• Prepare and submit all environmental permits

• Create and manage budgets for EHS activities including consulting and testing, waste removal, safety equipment, safety recognition activities, etc.

• Assist HR with the management of workers’ compensation in such a way that employees having legitimate claims expeditiously receive required benefits while protecting the company’s assets from illegitimate claims

Required qualifications

• BS degree in Engineering, Occupational Safety and Health, Environmental Management or closely related field

• Minimum of 5 years demonstrated EHS management experience in a manufacturing environment.

• Strong understanding and experience with California environmental regulations and reporting requirements

• Experience preparing and delivering EH&S training

• Incident Investigation expertise including Root Cause Analysis or Five Why Analysis.

• Computer proficiency in Microsoft Word, Excel, PowerPoint

• Strong leadership, project management and team facilitation skills

• Effective communication skills (writing, presentation, data organization)

Desired qualifications

• Computer proficiency in Minitab or similar statistical software

• Certified Safety Professional or Certified Industrial Hygienist

• Greenbelt certification

About the South Gate Plant:

Our South Gate facility opened in 1938 and has grown into a 250,000 square foot manufacturing center of excellence.  Today, the plant employs about 150 people, working in a team environment, to produce, maintain and ship our vinyl-flooring tile.  The City of South Gate is located just 12 miles southeast of downtown Los Angeles.  It is a place that is continually enhancing its downtown, renewing buildings and public infrastructure, attracting new merchants and customers and promoting a revival of the city's history.
