Ms. LoftusCourse Syllabus: ELA 11September 2019 - 2020 “Man’s [Woman’s] greatness lies in his power of thought.”-Blaise PascalE-mail: Adrienne_Loftus@Wheatland.k12.ny.usRoom: 311Course Introduction:Welcome to ELA 11! Ms. Loftus looks forward to working with you this year as we read some great works of literature. This year will prove to be an exciting one as we explore the depths of the human condition from great love to great grief, the effects of greed and prejudice, and the impact of societal rules and regulations on the human experience. We will cover a variety of literary works, techniques, and genres that include short stories and poetry; the texts we will cover include, but are not limited to:The Great Gatsbyby F. Scott FitzgeraldThe Crucible by Arthur MillerThe Scarlet Letter by Nathaniel HawthornePoetry by Emily Dickinson, Claude McKay, and Robert Frost……and many more selections! In addition to the abovementioned readings, we will also focus on preparing for a number of assessments, such as the New York State Regents Exam. Over the course of the school year, you will be doing a significant amount of writing and reading. Expect to work diligently on all assignments. Rules:Listen, acknowledge, and respond to directives and requests Use appropriate and respectful language with peers and adultsArrive to class on time Stay in class or have a pass in public spaces Be safe & respect others' personal dignity and space (hands and feet to self) Grading Policy: A student’s grade will be determined by the following percentages:30% -- Writing30% -- Assessments20% -- Homework20% -- Participation Ms. Loftus expects each of you to be involved in your own learning, as well as in your individual progress. She will do everything in her power to help you succeed in this class. In return, you need to do everything in your power to succeed. Plan to complete all assignments, participate (which will be worth credit), pay attention, and respect all classmates. If Ms. Loftus needs to speak to you more than once during a class period for less-than-desirable behavior, a consequence in line with The Code of Character, Conduct, and Support will be issued. Assignment policy:Writing: Projects and papers will be counted in the writing part of your grade. You may hand these assignments in late, but you will lose 10% per school day up to 50%. Homework/Participation: Ms. Loftus will accept late assignments (minus 10% per day down to half credit). In the event that you were legally absent, you will have until the end of the week (that Friday) in which the work was due to make it up. After that, you will earn a grade of zero. If there is a participation grade given on a day you are absent, you will either be granted an exemption or you will get an alternate assignment. Assessments: You have until the end of the week (that Friday) to make up a test or quiz. If you do not, you will receive a zero since tests and quizzes are often handed back on the following Monday. Only significant/unique situations will warrant an exception to this rule. You will have homework. Ms. Loftus expects you to complete it. The time it will take for you to do this depends on your reading level, as well as the environment in which you are attempting to read. Ms. Loftus suggests a quiet place with few to no distractions. In the event time in class is provided in order to read, Ms. Loftus demands that you use this time wisely. Ms. Loftus will update SchoolTool on a weekly basis. Please check there for up-to-date grade information. Attendance Policy:Do not be late! Being late means entering the room without a pass after the bell rings. Tardy 3 times = referral (in line with The Code of Character, Conduct, and Support). If you miss a test or quiz due to an absence, you must schedule time with Ms. Loftus after school in the classroom to make it up. You have until the end of the week in which you were absent to make up your test or quiz. Failing to make up your quiz by the end of the week means you will earn a zero. When you are absent from class, first, ask a classmate what you missed. In addition, refer to your calendar. The calendar should tell you what we did in class the day you were out. After consulting with a friend and looking at the calendar, if you still have questions, see Ms. Loftus immediately so that you can get caught up quickly. See Ms. Loftus at a time where we can have a full conversation about what you missed (not in between sets just before class starts). Plagiarism Policy:If you have questions about plagiarism and exactly what it is, please ask—don’t assume. Ms. Loftus takes plagiarism very seriously and it will not be tolerated. We will review plagiarism before tackling writing pieces and before the research project. Please see the Code of Character, Conduct, and Support for more information. Heading: For each assignment, please include an ELA 11 heading. Since we will follow MLA this year, our heading will be such. This heading includes:Student’s nameMs. LoftusELA 11: Set ___Date Restrooms: Please strive to use the restrooms between class periods. However, should an emergency arise and you need to use the restroom during class, please wait until a work time to ask. If permission is granted, you need to write a hall pass and keep it with you at all times as there are hall monitors that may check. Please be prompt.
