Poor planning on your part does not create a crisis.Accelerated ReaderBased on Star test Z.P.D., each student will read thirty minutes per day, or at least twenty pages per day. Students must read at home. Students may read more than thirty minutes daily and are given time during the day to read in various classes if they finish their work. Students should read sixty minutes each weekend. Six-week goals will be set for each student based on the results of the Star test. Studies have shown that students who successfully meet AR goals show growth on state mandated tests. AR is to be taken seriously.Five AR grades are taken each six weeks. AR grades will be included in the daily category of the student’s grade. One grade is entered at the 3-week period for average percent correct to that point. Grades entered at the end of the six weeks are for expository requirements, award winner, 4 point (minimum) book and for combination of average percent correct and point goal. Students must read three expository books each six weeks. Expository books worth 3 or more points will meet the total requirement. Students must also read one award winning book each six weeks grading period. The student is responsible for completing the form for documentation and turning it in to Mrs. Sehlke. All students must read one book worth at least 4 points each six weeks. As class novels are read, individual test grades may be used as well.Grades from AR 360 will also be taken throughout each six weeks grading period.Tests will be taken in Mrs. Sehlke’s room any period of the day with permission from teacher. No testing in the library or any other class without permission. Students must enter room quietly so the class will not be disturbed. Students may not interact with anyone in the class when coming to test. Students may be asked to leave or receive an infraction for this. If caught cheating on an AR quiz, the student will receive a zero for that quiz grade. AR library books will be checked out during ELAR class time. Students will have two books checked out at all times.E. L. A. Current Event ReportA current event is something that is happening now, or has happened within the last month. It is newsworthy to the general population. Box scores of ballgames or “who wore what” to the awards shows are not newsworthy events. One current event research report is due each six weeks. Due dates for each six weeks will be posted on the white board. The assignment will not be accepted after the deadline. Reports may be turned in before the due date. If a student is absent on the due date or has problems printing at home, reports and the articles may be emailed to my school email account. Reports must be typed. The article must be stapled to the typed report. Students will research newspapers, periodicals, or the Internet. Great sites are and Time for Kids. Wikipedia, Newsvine, or blogs will not be allowed as sources. Students will analyze the current event and write a one-page typed (minimum) report on this event. The report should include the following criteria in at least three paragraphs: a summary of the event, impact on the community, state or nation, global impact if applicable, and how this event impacts the emotions of the student. Do not quote from the article; summarize and paraphrase the information. A lesson is done in class so students understand the process. Font larger than 12 will not be accepted and crazy, wild fonts are not appropriate. School computers may be used for research and typing, with parental consent. Information typed on a school computer will be saved on a flash drive, not the server. Students may stay after school to type reports with advance notice to avoid scheduling conflicts. Be aware of plagiarism and remember the consequences discussed in class. If you plagiarize in your report, you will receive a zero. The current event is under the major grade category and the grade is entered twice.STAAR ReadingTestThis year students have an opportunity to take a state-mandated reading test. Per state guidelines, students must pass this test in order to promote to 9th grade. Reading Plus is an on-line supplemental program that students will be graded on each week. The skills learned will assist in success on the STAAR test. If the student does not complete these assignments at school, they must be done at home. The student may log in from home or the public library computer. The site code is 900West.Study Island is another on-line resource that I will be using during the first semester. Grades are taken once per six weeks. The topics assigned correlate to the STAAR test and may also be done at home. CommunicationCommunication with your student is critical for success. Students must gain independence while having the safety net that the 8th grade environment provides. Please allow your child to make decisions, which may have consequences that are unfavorable, that will enable healthy growth and development. Use parent portal to view grades, as well as weekly grade sheets, so you can encourage your student to do their best and complete assignments. Your student will be able to help you understand expectations, deadlines, assignments, and grades. Having open dialogue with your student will make 8th grade easier for all parties. Before contacting the school with questions, talk to your child. DisciplineBehavioral expectations are high, as are my academic expectations. Parental involvement is critical to this process. Encourage your student to follow rules and procedures. Most issues will be resolved between the teacher and the student. If further problems arise, parents will be contacted. The student handbook outlines the procedures and policies for discipline. Please sign and return this form.Mrs. Sehlke,We have read the class requirements, expectations and procedures. We have discussed these and understand what we must do to have a successful school year. We will work with you to ensure that our 8th grade year is a positive experience for us and for you.Student signature ______________________________________Parent signature _______________________________________Home/cell phone _______________ Work phone _______________Parent email address _________________________________We think it may be helpful for you to know the following information: ................
