Will Be Missed

Article from The Huntsville Item

Raul Madera Gonzalez aka La Cumbia or Madera died at the age of 51. He lived in Huntsville, TX for over 15 years and died of cardiac arrest at the early hours of Sunday May 29th.

Raul was born in Tlalcosahua, Jalisco in Mexico on April 22, 1965.

Throughout his life he worked many jobs and went to college to pursue his career as a veterinarian. Raul was a generous, loving, and caring person. You couldn't be sad while being with him. He made you laugh even if you didn't want to. He never lost a single friendship, and he was loved by all. He treated everyone with respect because he expected to be respected. He was a great dad, husband, brother and friend. His heart was so big and he gave us every bit of it.

Raul is survived by his wife Irma Martinez and children: Zitlalic, Denise, and Adolfo. He also leaves behind his mother and father, Guadalupe Eluterio Madera and sisters and brothers, Leticia, Guadalupe, Carlos, Javier, Joel, and nieces and nephews.

Men’s Golf Association

By Steve Morrell

As most of you know, we had to say goodbye to our good friend and wonderful golf course worker, Raul Madera last week.

Raul worked for Waterwood for many years. In addition to working for the golf course, he did lawn work for many current and past Waterwood residents.

He will be missed not only for his hard work, but also as a good friend. Raul always greeted us with a big smile and a hand shake or a hug.

Thanks to the generosity of the Waterwood Community, we were able to present his family with a $5,000 donation. Our deepest condolences go out to all of Raul’s family.

MEN’S GOLF ASSOCIATION

By Steve Morrell

Thanks also to all of you who continue to voluntarily donated to keep the golf course looking good. We will continue to employ Oscar and another worker to keep the course in good shape. Many of our contributors are non-golfers who want to keep our community looking great. If you are new to the community and want to be involved, you may make contributions to WMGA. You may give your contribution to me, or our treasurer, Rick Brown, or you may leave it at the WIA office.

As the 4th of July approaches, we want to remind residents that guests are welcomed to Waterwood. However, on holiday weekends we see numerous cases where guests, many of them youngsters on golf carts and bicycles, are either racing around or driving on the greens. If you have guests over the 4th we ask that you accompany them while they are here.

WATERING THE GREENS

The Mens Golf Association has been working hard to get water to our greens. The irrigation system is showing its age. Luckily, with all the rain we have been receiving, we have not had to use the system much.

Gayfeathers

By Maryann Readal

Waterwood Parkway Maintenance

The grass on the Parkway has been cut within the Waterwood subdivision. You may also have noticed that considerable work has been done recently on the Parkway to improve the overall appearance. Invasive yaupons on the Parkway sections within Waterwood have been cut to grade and will be maintained that way. Numerous dead trees have been cut down and removed

as well as fallen trees. In addition, the badly neglected and overgrown area north of the Waterwood entrance at 190 has been cleared of invasive bushes, trees and vines, and the tree canopy has also been raised to greatly improve the overall appearance of the Parkway median in this area.

The Gayfeathers are up and getting ready to bloom. Be on the lookout for these beauties along Waterwood Parkway in the next month or so. There is a unique, large concentration of Gayfeathers in the Waterwood Parkway median near Highway 190 between where the Parkway splits into a divided road and the first paved median crossover, going south to the 190 entrance. For this reason this section of the Parkway median will not be mowed until after most of the Gayfeathers have bloomed and gone to seed. This section of the Parkway median also has concentrations of other native wildflowers as well.

Native bees and butterflies love the Gayfeather flowers and the flowers also attract hummingbirds and birds.

Except for this area of Gayfeathers, expect to see the grass in the median and along the Parkway cut around Memorial Day, depending on the rain.

Waterwood Women’s League Scholarship Winners

By Carol McVay

This year the WWL presented three scholarships.  Two went to Coldspring/Oakhurst Students. Bliane Mizell was awarded a Technical scholarship and Emily Whisenant received an Academic one.  Our academic scholarship is $600 per semester providing the student's grades are within our guidelines.  The Onalaska recipient was Jamie Hendrickson for a Technical scholarship.

We gave two Technical scholarships this year because the Technical winner of last year failed to follow through with her course and received no funds.

Our scholarships are funded by our fund raisers.  Of course our largest one is the garage sale we hold usually every two years.  Another steady contribution comes from the library located at the Post Office building.  Our books are only $.50 each.  They are donated by anyone who chooses to drop them off.  Unfortunately more books are removed than $.50's are put in the locked box provided.  If you see a book you want but came to the post office without money, no problem, just remember to pay your charge next time.  It is on the honor system and we sincerely hope that all of we Waterwoodians are honorable.

ELECTRIC SHOCK DROWNING - EVERYONE NEEDS TO BE AWARE!

What is an Electric Shock Drowning (ESD)?

ESD happens when a swimmer comes into contact with electrical current.  The current – in this case, alternating current (AC) – causes skeletal muscular paralysis, lasting for only an instant, but long enough to incapacitate a swimmer allowing him to drown.

Where does the electricity come from?

The electric current “leaks” from boats and docks into the water. It can come from frayed wires, improperly wired systems or an AC grounding system that is damaged or malfunctioning.

What causes people to be electrocuted?

Electrical current will always attempt to return to its source in order to complete the elecrical circuit. Electrical current is resourceful and will find any way to do that, taking the path of least resistance and most conductivity (anything that will help the current move along its path). The way alternating current (AC) searches for its source is the most deadly for humans because it takes only a small amount of AC to disrupt the electrical impulses that control our muscles and nerves.

Why does ESD happen in fresh water and not salt water?

We go back to conductivity for the answer. Fresh water is not a good electrical conductor. Because it is not a good conductor, the alternating current looks for something better. A human body in fresh water becomes that something better. The high amount of salt in humans make our bodies far better conductors of electrical current than fresh water.

How much electricity is needed for this to happen?

Not much at all. It takes only small amounts of leaking AC to incapacitate or electrocute a person. As small an amount as 15 milliamps can cause paralysis, 100 milliamps – or a third of the amount of electricity need to light a 40-watt light bulb – can kill a person in seconds. In comparison, a double AA battery produces 2400 milliamps per hour.

Doesn’t anyone regulate docks and boats secured to them?

There are marine codes that regulate docks and boats. They are NFPA 303 (Fire Protection Standard for Marinas and Boatyards), NFPA 70, and National Electric Code 555 (NEC). also notes that “boats not wired in accordance with standards set forth by the American Boat & Yacht Council (ABYC) can be a source of AC leakage.”

Can you tell if water is unsafe to swim in?

No, but here are some tips that could keep you safe.

• Never swim within 100 yards of any fresh water marina or boatyard.

•  If you have a boat, have it tested to make sure it is not leaking electricity. You can buy a clamp meter and test it yourself.

• Have a qualified electrician do any electric work needed on a dock or on your boat.

• Do not use a household extension cords for powering your docked boat.

If you feel "tingly" in the water, you could be at risk for shock. In that case you should: (courtesy of )

• Have someone turn off the shore power connection at the meter base and/or unplug shore power cords.

• Tell anyone in the water to move away from the dock.

• Stop anyone else from entering the water.

• If you believe someone has been shocked, reach, throw, row, but don’t go into the water to get to anyone who you think  has been shocked.

•  Call for help. Use 911 or VHF Channel 16.

• Try CPR on the person; don't stop until trained help arrives.

The Pet Corner

By Jeanna Thornton

Buddy came to us in January, a drop off with heart worms, a dog without a collar. We had no idea how special he was until he made himself at home. With a soft touch and an infectious smile, he meets everyone with enthusiasm, and waits eagerly to be petted without jumping up or barking. I'd describe Buddy as grateful and he shows it with obedience and loyalty to his post at the farm.

Houston Chronicle subscribers received a letter with their paper on June 4th.  The letter advised that due to the subscribers in the area dropping, it was no longer cost effective to deliver the paper.

 Chronicle Subscribers

Several people were upset over this and have called the Chronicle.  At least two of us have been told the letter shouldn't have been sent and the paper will continue being delivered.  In order to add "meat" to these calls, I strongly suggest any Chronicle subscriber who wishes to continue receiving the paper call the Chronicle to express their wishes.

The phone number in the letter was (713) 362-7211 or 888-220-7211.  If you call, you will get a series of automated prompts.  Ignore them and repeatedly hit "0" and you should get a live person.

Let's let them know we really want a paper in our hands.
