Time to drill, drill, drill!!! Click on the links below (one at a time) to practice your balancing, nomenclature and other chemical skills. If you finish early, practice your typing.

1. Naming compounds – NOTE! – These are all binary compounds. There will be some that you do not know. Keep in mind that if the compound is covalent, you will need to use the prefixes di, tri, penta, octa, etc.

Make sure to read the directions before you begin. You will not know how to do some of these - that’s OK – just keep going until you get 10 correct. Print out the page when you reach ten correct answers. And yes, there is a way to cheat, but please resist the temptation to do so. Click here to start.

2. Now do the same thing in reverse, writing the formulas based on the compound name. Again, there will be some you don’t know, however, if you know your hydrate prefixes, you have a chance to get them right anyway. Keep going until you get 10 correct, and print out the page. Click here to begin.

3. Time to brush up on those sig figs! When you get 10 correct, print out the page. Start here.

Make sure to write your name on each page!

4. Read the following as an introduction to problem #4.

The Invisible Killer

Dihydrogen monoxide is colorless, odorless, tasteless, and kills uncounted thousands of people every year. Most of these deaths are caused by accidental inhalation of DHMO, but the dangers of dihydrogen monoxide do not end there. Prolonged exposure to its solid form causes severe tissue damage. Symptoms of DHMO ingestion can include excessive sweating and urination, and

possibly a bloated feeling, nausea, vomiting and body electrolyte imbalance. For those who have become dependent, DHMO withdrawal means certain death.

Click on this site to do research on DHMO. Using the information given, attempt to determine the common name of this potentially fatal compound. If you think you know, write the answer on the top sheet that you turn in (from above). If you think you know, do not tell anyone else! The amount of extra credit points will be spread out over those who get the correct answer. Good luck!
