Ms. Conner shared information about a book “Quiet Strong” about her father, Sherman Byrd, who was the first African American Explosive Ordnance Dispoal Diver in the US Navy. Mr. Sloan shared that we also need to look for resources that teach African American History to students not reading at grade level. Structured Professional Development - Tilena Washington-RobinsonMs. Tilena Washington-Robinson shared information about upcoming professional development for district teachers:January 14 – Infusing the Teaching of African American Civil Rights into Social Studies Curriculum – M/J Civics and High School US History teachersFebruary 2 – Local Civil Rights History, Adonnica Toler of the Ritz Theatre will present to teachers in grades 3-5A suggestion was made by a Task Force Member that the district needs to provide information about the practical applications of voter registration. Erin Conklin and Tilena Washington Robinson shared the efforts the district currently makes in getting eligible students registered as well as the participation in mock elections and election activities.African American Studies Curriculum – Tilena Washington-RobinsonElementary - Revisions to ELA curriculum guide4th grade lesson revisions aligned to the teaching of African American History are complete and have been added to the elementary social studies curriculum guideThe elementary specialist is working to finalize the lessons for 5th grade social studiesMiddle School – no updatesHigh School – the curriculum guides were updated to include instruction on the LaVilla neighborhood when reviewing The Harlem Renaissance (Unit 7, The Roaring Twenties)District staff are meeting with the textbook publisher of an African American History textbook to see if revisions can be made to include information about Florida (the book is based on Texas), along with other revisions.Books reviewed for classroom consideration included the following:Hope of FreedomWomen of the American RevolutionBoth books were found to be good classroom resources. University/School District Partnerships - Erin ConklinMs. Conklin shared that district staff will be meeting with our university partners on December 21 to review a state instructional guide put out by DOE for carrying out PD for the district in grades K-5.Dr. David Jamison shared three additional classroom titles for consideration:Folktales, Fables, and MythsCivil RightsOral HistoriesParent/Community Partnerships – Tia LeathersFamily and Community Engagement is planning a Sunday matinee on January 31 at the Jumbo Shrimp Baseball Grounds for a socially distanced family viewing of the movie “42” about the life of baseball great Jackie Robinson. Ms. Leathers will share the flyer when it is ready. Student Comments – Dana KriznarA rubric has been developed for high school students to earn volunteer points towards their Bright Futures Scholarship by participating in the AAHTF. The rubric is attached for interested students and teachers.
