Donation will help schools upgrade security measures
Central Christian Church has generously donated $14,000 to help pay for improvements to security systems at Boyd and Weller elementary schools. On Monday, April 29, church leaders will present a check to the schools during an event at 9:30 a.m. at Boyd Elementary School, 1409 N. Washington Ave.
Earlier this year, SPS initiated a safety and security review of schools in the district to identify potential areas for improvement, particularly ways to bolster security at school entrances. Audits of all 36 elementary schools are expected to be completed by the end of this school year. Audits of middle schools and high schools will follow.
The Foundation for Springfield Public Schools offered to establish a fund and solicit donations to help with the cost of necessary safety and security upgrades at schools. Central Christian Church is the first community organization to contribute to that fund and has designated nearby schools Boyd and Weller to benefit.
“For more than 124 years Central Christian Church (Disciples of Christ) has supported our neighborhood and its schools,” said Pastor John Andrews. “We make this contribution in the belief that all students, staff and volunteers of our schools deserve our help and commitment; especially with providing a safe and nurturing environment for learning.”
The church’s donation will pay for the cost of cameras, intercoms, magnetic door locks and the labor to install the systems at both schools.
“Central Christian Church has a long history of demonstrating its support of our schools,” said Superintendent Norm Ridder. “The church and its members have always been generous with their time and resources and we are grateful to them for stepping forward to help fill this critical need.”
For the past 13 years, Central Christian Church has developed strong ties with the Boyd and Weller communities, supporting the teachers and families in those schools. The church and its members provide an after school program for Boyd students as well as an annual Book Festival at the end of each academic year and Breakfast with Santa event. The church also sponsors a Scout-Reach Troop from Weller.
Donations to the SPS Safety and Security Fund may be sent to Foundation for Springfield Public Schools, 1131 Boonville, Springfield, MO, 65802, and can be designated for specific schools. Donations can also be made online at the Foundation’s website: . For more information, call Jana Bachus, Foundation executive director, at 523-0144.
