Kindergarten Science Curriculum Guide

The Elementary Science Curriculum Guide of Elkhart Community Schools has been designed as the primary resource for all elementary science teachers in terms of organizing, sequencing, planning, and teaching the curriculum. In this guide, the teacher will find an Elkhart Community Schools’ Course Description and the Indiana Academic Standards for Kindergarten Science. The Academic Units provide a scope and sequence for the instructional organization of the Indiana Academic Standards for Kindergarten Science. This analysis includes objectives, indicators, instructional/assessment activities, and resources for instruction. The appendices include possible instructional resources beyond the textbook, which are supportive of the science instructional goals of the state of Indiana and Elkhart Community Schools. Finally, the guide contains information for the assessment and evaluation of student progress towards the educational attainment of these goals.

A great deal of time and effort went into the development of this document and it is important to recognize those staff members who contributed to its creation.

COURSE DESCRIPTION

ENVIRONMENTAL AND SCIENCE EXPERIENCES

(Kindergarten)

0460-KG

Kindergarten Environmental and Science Experiences emerges from the children’s natural curiosity of, and interest in, objects and events within their immediate environment of home, school, and community. Exploration, through observation and motor manipulation, provides opportunities for students to develop a solid foundation for learning age-appropriate scientific concepts and vocabulary, as well as inquiry skills. In learning to view their world scientifically, kindergarten children think concretely as they compare, contrast, sort, classify, question, and then discuss their findings.
