Elementary Service-Learning Coach
Academic service-learning is a teaching method by which students use what they are learning in class to perform service that meets a genuine need in their school, local or global community. Service-learning activities strengthen students’ understanding of their academic studies, provide opportunities for additional formal learning, and foster a sense of responsibility and active citizenship.
The Service-Learning Coach helps other teachers plan, implement and assess service-learning at the building level. Specific duties may include:
• Tracking service and service-learning projects at the building level
• Provide assistance to teachers as they develop and coordinate service-learning experiences in their classrooms (e.g. Help identify community partners that connect to the curricular goals of a classroom project, direct interested teachers to service-learning websites, handbooks, project examples, and other resources to help them through the service-learning process, coordinate buses for field trips, etc.)
• Build and cultivate relationships with community partners in your school’s neighborhood
• Compile and/or update service-learning professional development resources for building use
• Provide service-learning in-service or other training opportunities for school faculty as needed in consultation with the Principal and district Service-Learning Facilitator
• Maintain records of service-learning activities and report a summary of activities to Service-Learning Facilitator twice per year
Expectations:
• Attend all district Service-Learning Coach professional development activities as required (minimum of one per year)
• Promote service-learning best practices and the K-12 standards for quality service-learning
• Maintain regular communication with Service-Learning Facilitator (minimum of once per month)
Qualifications:
• Teacher certification preferred, although other school-based licensed staff will be considered
• Prior experience using academic service-learning in the classroom is preferred
