Summary – There are many resources available for teachers on this web site. There are lesson plans and activities that can be used for every grade level. Every subject and topic area is covered on this web site. Educational resources and materials can be purchased from this web site and information about books and authors are also discussed.

Commentary – This is one of my favorite websites for lesson planning resources. The information presented on this site is so helpful for teachers. The site is so easy to use and full of different lesson plan ideas and activities that are great for students in all grade levels.

2. Name of the resource – Free Elementary Language Arts Activities: Educational Interactive Games, Reading Writing and Book Making Online for Kids

Summary – This website includes interactive activities for children to learn important concepts in literacy. This website not only teaches the students about important reading and writing concepts; they are also learning about how to manipulate different aspects of a computer. One of the main components is also following directions.

Commentary – This site is great for using technology to teach to different learning styles and in a way that is different from pencil and paper. I like that the students are able to experiment with some of the activities and therefore they are learning how to use the different parts of a computer.

3.) Name of the resource – Edhelper

Summary – This website provides numerous resources for every subject. The topics are shown and there are worksheets or other materials available for reproduction. A few examples of resources that are available in the area of literacy include reading comprehension sheets, and writing prompts.

Commentary – I have used this website for so many different themes and subjects at the elementary level. The only downfall is that you have to purchase a membership to be able to print off worksheets for the students. Luckily I was student teaching in a building where they had a membership, so I didn't have to buy it.

4.) Name of the resource – 100 Best Books

Summary – This website provides a list of 100 best books, which was compiled by the National Education Association. It is broken up by age level. Along with the list of 100 books, there are links to lists of other great readings for children provided. The list was written in 1999, but they have provided a link to an updated list from 2007.

Commentary – When trying to decide what is good literature in the elementary classroom, this list is helpful. Many of the books shown on the list are classics and used in classrooms all over the country. I recognized most of these books and have seen them used in the classroom.

5.) Name of the resource – 4 Teachers Family of Tools

Summary – This website provides interactive online tools and additional resources for teachers so that they are able to provide lesson plans that include technology and higher level thinking skills. Some of the examples of tools available are online quizzes, and an online class calendar.

Commentary – The resources available on this site are great for integrating technology into the classroom. Once again, you have to be a member to access different parts of this web site, so teachers have to take the time to sign up. Luckily, this website is free.

6.) Name of the resource – Reader’s Theater Scripts and Plays

Summary – This website gives numerous scripts for students of all ages. Teachers may print these scripts/ plays for use in the classroom. Along with the actual scripts, there are also tips and tools for teacher and students to effectively use a reader’s theater in the classroom.

Commentary – Readers Theater is a great way to bring fun to teaching literacy. I have used numerous readers’ theaters in the classroom and the students just love them. They are great for teaching fluency and other aspects of literacy in the classroom.

7.) Name of the resource – Literacy Connections: Promoting Literacy and a Love of Reading

Summary – This web site lists various tools that a teacher can use when teaching bilingual, Spanish or ESL students. There are links to resources or information presented to buy books or other tools to be used in the classroom.

Commentary – This web site is very helpful for teachers who might be teaching students who aren't English speaking or who aren't as advanced in the English language. There are also organizations listed in case a teacher wanted to look for support outside the school system.

8.) Name of the resource – Lesson Planet

Summary – This web site lists hundreds of samples of lesson plans for integrating literacy in the classroom. There is a search engine that lets you pick the grade level and topic, so that they are narrowed down for viewing. Since there are so many available, it can be a little overwhelming at first.

Commentary – There are some really great lesson plans for literacy in the classroom, but there are also some that aren’t the best. Making sure that these lessons will fit the needs of the students in the classroom is the main issue when using the lesson plans off this site. Modifications will most likely be made to the given lessons. The only downfall is that you have to have a membership to this website, so unfortunately I was only able to browse through the site.

9.) Name of the resource – Brain Pop Jr.

Summary – This website provides interactive practice for students in all different categories. In the area of literacy, the students are reading on screen materials and there is a reading and writing section. The students are able to have fun while learning.

Commentary –Many of the websites that have to do with literacy you have to purchase to use the tools that are available. This is one of the websites I haven’t used before, but it looks like it would be a good resource for teaching literacy in the elementary classroom.

10.) Name of the resource – Teachnology: The Online Teacher Resource

Summary – This website provides printable worksheets that may be used in teaching reading comprehension. There are also tools on the website to make your own worksheets (ex. Cloze, bingo card maker, etc.).

Commentary – This is a great resource if a teacher needs comprehension worksheets. The worksheets vary in themes and subjects and are used for all different ages. Since these worksheets are printable, you don’t need to purchase a membership.
