Please note: All recommendations for special education programs will be made by the Committee on Special Education. These Talking Points are designed to assist families in understanding the change in location of special education programs their child may attend based on recommendations of the CSE.

Q: My child attends a small, special class program at Barton. Will there be a small, special class program in every zone?

A: No. These classes are highly specialized to address the unique needs of this population of students and will only be offered at Barton.

Q: My child is in grade 4 and attends a special class at Canaan. Will my child be able to attend Canaan for fifth grade since this is their "Moving-up" year?

A: Yes. If your child will be in grade 5 in a special class next year (2019-2020) then they will remain in Canaan for their "Moving-up" year.

Q: My child is recommended by the CSE to attend a special class next year. What schools will offer special classes?

A: Special class programs will be offered in each zone for the 2019-2020 school year. Students will attend school in their home zone at either Canaan, Tremont or Medford for Kindergarten through Grade 4. (All fifth grade students will attend special class at Canaan for the 2019-2020 school year.) Beginning in the 2020-2021 school year, Canaan, Tremont and Medford will offer Special Class program in grades K-5.

Q: My child has been attending a special class in Canaan since Kindergarten. Can my child stay at Canaan? A: Only students whose home school is either Barton or Canaan will attend special class at Canaan. (Excluding

fifth grade students for 2019-2020.)

Q: My child travels to school on a mini bus. If the school is changed due to redistricting, will the mini bus continue to bring my child to and from school?

A: If your child is now attending school in their home school they will travel to school on the regular bus unless the CSE determines that special transportation is required. If your child attends a school in the home zone that is not the home school, mini bus transportation will be provided.

Q: My child is in grade 4 and attends an Integrated Co-taught class. Will my child be able to attend this school for fifth grade since this is their "Moving-up" year?

A: Yes. If your child will be in grade 5 in an Integrated Co-taught class next year (2019-2020) then they will remain in the school they are presently attending (River or Eagle) for their "Moving-up" year.

Q: My child is entering Kindergarten next year and the CSE recommended an Integrated Co-taught class next year. What schools will offer inclusion in Kindergarten?

A: Integrated Co-taught classes programs at the elementary level will be offered in Kindergarten in each zone for the 2019-2020 school year. Students will attend school in their home zone at either River, Eagle or Barton for Kindergarten and will continue to do so as per the CSE until they transition to middle school.

Please note: All recommendations for special education programs will be made by the Committee on Special Education. These Talking Points are designed to assist families in understanding the change in location of special education programs their child may attend based on recommendations of the CSE.

Q: My child is in first grade in the Integrated Co-taught program. If the CSE recommends the same program where will my child attend school?

A: Students attending inclusion classes who will be in grades 1-5 will continue at River or Eagle for the 20192020 school year and each year thereafter until they transition to middle school.

Q: What if the class is full at my child's grade level? Will they have to go to a school outside their zone? A: The goal of redistricting is to offer program options in each zone. Integrated Co-taught programs will be

phased in at the elementary level beginning with Kindergarten so it is possible that a child may attend a school outside of the home zone. If a class is full, the District will make every effort to alleviate the issue however, attending school outside of the home zone may be considered.
