Communication and Kick-Off Event Ideas for Your School

A great way to create enthusiasm and recognition for Make School a Moving Experience is to host a kick-off event for your entire school. Kick-off events should motivate and encourage the staff and students (and even parents!) to be excited about participating in this initiative. These events can be held at different times of the day and include a variety of different activities. However, they should be interactive, fun, and highlight the importance of being more physically active at school. Some ideas include:

A PEP rally or school assembly with a special guest who emphasizes the importance of being physically active and living a healthy lifestyle. Some examples could include:

o Yojo ? Yojo is essentially a big, blue character who was created to perform motivational and educational comedy shows for large groups of children. Yojo's "Treat Your Body Right" show teaches children about being physically active everyday and making healthy food choices. This is a great show for promoting a healthy lifestyle!

o Mark Rothstein's `World of Rope Jumping' ? As a performing professional athlete, role model, entertainer and educator, Mark's presentation is positive, interactive and motivational. He performs rope jumping routines and interactive character building skits on a variety of different topics.

o Local celebrities ? Wilmington Blue Rocks players, Philadelphia professional sports players, or even players from local high schools or universities

Launching a school-wide walking club ? have students create walking paths around the school, in the gym, or on the playground marking off different distances that can be recorded o Start a "Walk with the Principal" school-wide walking club o Host a "Walk to School Day" as a way to launch the club. o Learn more about how Delaware Safe Routes to School (SRTS) can support your school by visiting: o Check out for some other great ideas!

Hosting a student/staff wellness challenge ? using a program like Steps Across Delaware o Classroom vs. classroom (can create team names), teacher vs. teacher, student vs. student (within each class or as entire school or grade)

Having students or teachers create catchy physical activity messages and then broadcast them over the schools PA system throughout the year

Hosting a field day ? have participants rotate through a series of stations where they can play games, watch skilled athletes demonstrate a sport, or take part in a beginner's lesson that focuses on aerobic conditioning, strength training, flexibility, or balance

Talking to your PTA about doing a physical activity fundraiser for your school

o Fun runs, family runs (1 mile, 5K, 10K)

o Walk-a-thons o Bike-a-thons, trike-a-thons,

community bike parade o Jump-rope-a-thons

(Jump Rope for Heart, jump/) o Dance or a family fitness night o Bowling night/bowl-a-thon

o Skate night/skate-a-thon o Treasure/scavenger hunt with

different physical activity stations o Free throw contest (Hoops for Heart, hoops/) o Golf tournaments o Student-teacher sports events (baseball, basketball, volleyball, soccer, miniature golf)

Hosting a family food and fun night ? students and families come together at an already scheduled school-wide event (such as a school open-house or a PTA/PTO sponsored activity) for a night of food, fun, and physical activity.

Other ideas for your school:

Have morning movement announcements that get the whole school up and out of their seats

Create different bulletin boards around the school ? benefits of physical activity, the importance of being physically active, different physical activity ideas depending on the weather or time of year, etc.

Include information and updates and in newsletters or on the school webpage about Make School a Moving Experience to inform the parents, guardians, and the community about what you are doing at your school to help kids be more physically active o Check out our website, , for ready-to-use newsletter copy blocks

Talk with the after-school provider at your school to see how you can collaborate on different physical activity related programs or activities
