Policy Statement:

The school council shall adopt and implement the curriculum set forth by the Greenup County Board of Education. McKell Elementary School staff acknowledges that the curriculum is based on and aligned with Kentucky's Core Academic Standards. Furthermore, the council trusts that the curriculum is age/developmentally appropriate and addresses a common academic core that will not only address the learning needs of each student but also support a smooth transition from one level to the next.

Teacher responsibilities stemming from effective curriculum implementation will be as follows:

By August 1st of each school year special and regular education teachers will review the standards to ensure that curriculum maps are properly aligned.

1. Pacing guides will be followed to maintain a clear and unified focus.

2. Formative and summative assessment data will be used to drive instruction.

3. Collaboratively develop a document for each grade level that reflects expectations per term to post in each classroom and post on the school web page.

4. Collaborate with teachers of other levels to ensure that gaps do not exist between grade levels.

5. Collaborate with teachers of other levels to ensure that program review requirements are being addressed and that cross-curricular integration occurs.

*Note areas throughout the year in which revision is needed to the principal by June 30th of each school year so changes may be reflected before the beginning of a new school year.

Principal responsibilities stemming from effective curriculum implementation will be as follows:

1. Collaboratively work with staff at each grade level to review and share instructional practices that support the full implementation of each program review and the core academic standards.

2. Review lesson plans, student growth goals and pacing guides of each teacher to ensure curriculum is being followed and implemented.

3. Conduct walk through observations to ensure and monitor effective implementation of instruction. Post observation conferences will be conducted to provide teachers feedback.

4. Monitor the availability of resources to promote opportunities for students in each of the program review areas: K-3, Writing, Practical Living & Consumerism and Arts & Humanities.
