POETIC CONCERNS What is Elizabeth Bishop trying to accomplish in her works? Elizabeth Bishop is considered to be an anti-confessional poet because of her style of writing. From my analysis of her poems she never really wrote too much on the details of her personal life but when she wrote about own life she was very discrete (ex. she wrote in the third person or in metaphors). She supposedly considered herself to be a strong feminist (according to one website) but in others she denied this claim. Being a lesbian, her work has almost no reflection on her sexuality. She wanted to be judged not on her orientation but on the quality of her writing. What she is mostly trying to accomplish in her writings- what most people try to accomplish in their writing- is to let out some kind of emotion. She tells stories about her life, moments she captures in a poem.Though Bishop does it in a very discreet way, there are some poems where she struggles to not her emotions explode off the page. ................
