Statement of Purpose/Mission Statement

The mission of Arthurdale Heritage, Inc. (AHI) is:

• To acquire, restore, and maintain community buildings as a means of preserving for future generations

Arthurdale’s unique heritage as the first federal homestead project under Franklin D. Roosevelt’s administration.

• To acquire and preserve data and supporting evidence such as mementoes, pictures, news stories, audio visuals, crafts, books, manuscripts collections, and pamphlets about the history of the Arthurdale community; and to cooperate with other organizations and projects around the country that focus on projects supported by the Division of Subsistence Homesteads, Departments of the Interior, and its successor agencies, and similar New Deal-era Projects.

• To disseminate information and stimulate public interest in the goals of Arthurdale Heritage, Inc., through the preparation of educational materials, programs, festivals, plays, tours, and other related activities.

• To nurture an interest in the arts and crafts by providing space and teachers for such things as weaving, spinning, pottery, woodworking, blacksmithing, basketry, dance, and drama; to house craft industries, studios, and shops, and for other related purposes set forth in the Charter.

2007 Programs

AHI strives to provide quality community programs as a part of its mission to educate the public about the history of Arthurdale. Programs not only bring visitors to our site, giving exposure to our small community, they also raise needed funds for our operating expenses.

New Deal Festival

The New Deal Festival was held on July 14, 2007. The previous activities that covered the two-day event were combined into one full day of events including traditional Appalachian music, an artisan market, an antique car and tractor show, and a lecture series. Artist demonstrations included blacksmithing by the Appalachian Blacksmith Association and a “Sheep to Shawl” demonstration by the Morgantown Fiber Guild. A lecture series sponsored by the West Virginia Humanities Council was held at the Arthurdale Inn and featured novelist Gretchen Laskas, storytelling by Mountain Echoes, and lectures about Arthurdale and the New Deal Homestead Community program given by AHI Director Amanda Penix. “Eleanor Roosevelt’ also visited as portrayed by living history actor Patty Cooper. AHI held the 3rd Annual Beth Bonner 5K Run and 2-Mile Walk. The Arthurdale Tire Kickers hosted the 5th Annual Antique Car and Tractor Show. Art’s Commercial and Custom Meat Packing provided the barbeque chicken dinners for the event. Because of rising programming expenses, AHI decided to charge an admission fee to the festival this year. The gate admissions paid for the entertainment for the day.

Classes

Throughout the year, AHI offered various classes as fundraisers. Our most popular class, again this year, were the ballroom dance classes, taught by Kimble & Billie Lovett. Watercolorist Joan Carr taught several watercolor workshops and a watercolor pencil workshop.

Bus Trip

AHI took a weekend trip to the Potomac Highlands of West Virginia in June. Saturday, the group rode the train at Cass Scenic Railroad to Bald Knob, where it enjoyed the sites and a sack lunch. We spent the evening and night at Snowshoe Resort. Sunday’s activities included visiting the National Radio Astronomy Observatory in Green Bank and the Tygart Valley Homesteads in Randolph County.

Monthly Events

The AHI Program Committee organized monthly events including dinners, the 5th Annual Community Yard Sale, a Fall Rummage Sale, and the annual Ice Cream Social. AHI also continued the tradition of hosting square dances every month. Other events held include Santa, Fall Fun Day, and an Easter Egg Hunt.

‘50s Are Nifty Elimination Dinner

Because 2006 marked our 20th, and last, year as a co-sponsor of the Valley District Fair, AHI planned an additional monthly fundraiser to help with our general operating expenses. We held an elimination dinner held in April that made AHI $10,000.

WVU Sporting Events

Arthurdale Heritage began volunteering as event staff at WVU men’s basketball games this year. Volunteers serve as ushers and ticket takers, raising $7.50 per hour worked for each volunteer. This fundraiser has generated over $2,300 for AHI’s general operating income. AHI plans to continue this fundraising event by volunteering at other WVU sporting events in the 2007-2008 year.

Craft Shop

The AHI Craft Shop Committee completed another successful year. Eleven volunteers staffed the Craft Shop on Saturdays and Sundays from May to October. The shop also hosted its annual Christmas Open House every Saturday between Thanksgiving and Christmas, which was also staffed by volunteers. In order to make the shop run more efficiently, the committee purchased a new computer which will be used for inventory and sales next year.

Many new consignor and wholesale items have been added to the shop during the past year, which has resulted in the shop surpassing the previous year sales. Upholding its mission of aiding the general operations of Arthurdale Heritage, the shop continues to contribute to the general operations of the organization. In addition to paying monthly rent, the Craft Shop Committee has agreed to start paying the electric bill for the shop and also donated $2,500 to the general operating account. Thanks to the Craft Shop Committee for a job well done!

Grants

AHI received $14,540.00 in grant funds during the 2006-2007 fiscal year. Grants funded various projects including advertising for the New Deal Festival and a conservation assessment of our museum. We submitted some grant applications that were not funded. However, these are projects that we believe will benefit our institution and will be pursuing them again at a later date.

GRANTS AWARDED

West Virginia Humanities Council

AHI received $600.00 to host a lecture series for the 2007 New Deal Festival. These funds paid for lectures by author Gretchen Laskas and AHI director Amanda Penix, as well as living history actor Patty Cooper’s portrayal of Eleanor Roosevelt.

Direct Advertising Grant

AHI received a grant from the WV Division of Tourism for $1,400.00 to fund advertising for the New Deal Festival. Print ads were featured in Maryland, Pennsylvania, and West Virginia newspapers and magazines. Radio ads were featured on Preston County stations as well as WAJR from Morgantown. The grant also paid for signage at the I-79 South Welcome Center in Morgantown featured in June, July, and August to advertise the New Deal Festival and Ice Cream Social.

Fairs and Festivals Budget Digest

AHI received $5,000 from the West Virginia Division of Culture and History for the 2007 New Deal Festival to be used for programming such as entertainment.

Conservation Assessment Program

Heritage Preservation selected AHI to be a part of the 2007 Conservation Assessment Program, which provides $6,540.00 to pay for consultants to assess our current museum and archival collections as well as our museum buildings and give us recommendations on how to make our environments more conservation-friendly. The assessment will take place October 25-27, 2007.

West Virginia State Historic Preservation Office

Director Penix received a $700 scholarship to attend the National Trust for Historic Preservation conference in Pittsburgh, PA, in October 2006.

Wal-Mart Matching Grant Program

AHI received $1,000 from Wal-Mart store #2083 in Morgantown for the 2007 New Deal Festival.

GRANT APPLICATIONS SOUGHT

Digitization Start-Up Grant

AHI requested funding from the National Endowment for the Humanities to digitize the New Deal Homestead Museum and Archives collection. The project will place oral histories, photographs, and other archival materials online through a new interactive website for Arthurdale. The total project will cost almost $10,000. – Application not funded.

Innovative Programming Grant

AHI requested $4,000 from this grant through the Greater Morgantown Convention and Visitors’ Bureau to be used for advertisement for the 2007 New Deal Festival. – Application not funded.

Volunteers

AHI would not be where it is today without the support of its numerous volunteers. We thank all of you who came out to help with various events over the year. Thank you for your donation of time, something on which a price cannot be placed.

2006 Volunteers of the Year: Bob and Edna Day

AHI honored Bob and Edna Day at the 2006 anniversary dinner. The Days have volunteered countless hours for AHI since its inception and always work with a smile on their faces. Edna said she volunteers for AHI because she enjoys meeting people. “I deeply appreciate having lived in Arthurdale and being a part of history. I am very fortunate to have been here at the time of Arthurdale’s beginning,” she said of her experiences. When asked why he volunteers for AHI Bob replied, “Arthurdale is my home and I appreciate it. It takes many volunteers to keep it looking nice and a show place. I like to volunteer because it makes me feel more involved in community affairs, while advancing the goals of Arthurdale Heritage.”

Museum

Exhibits

The New Deal Homestead Museum hosted Snapshots in Time: A Photographic History of West Virginia, a traveling exhibition, comprised of one hundred images from the West Virginia State Archive. Comprised by the West Virginia Division of Culture and History, this exhibit depicts more than 140 years of history, culture, family, work, conflict, celebration, and tragedy in the Mountain State. AHI hosted this exhibit from June 11 to August 17, 2007.

Donations

The museum received several donations throughout the year of historic Arthurdale artifacts. The largest collection was given by Jeanne Rymer who donated the Stockdale Collection of Arthurdale furniture. This collection was purchased by Rymer’s mother, Nellie Blythe Stockdale, in the 1930s. The collection consists of thirty-two items made in Arthurdale. The collection is currently on display at the E-15 Homestead.

Admissions

The museum had 204 paid general admissions this year. This number is up 10% from last year’s admission. Of the 204 admissions, 51% paid adult admission, 45% paid senior admission, and 4% paid a child admission. We also hosted 5 groups for tours, totaling 308 visitors, 50% down from last year. Group tours included Valley Elementary students as well as an antique bike rally the weekend of MountainFest in July.

Hours

The New Deal Homestead Museum changed its hours this year to the following:

May-October: Tuesday-Sunday, 12-4 p.m.

November-April: Tuesday-Friday, 12-4 p.m.

We will be closed on Mondays.

Promotion of Arthurdale

Books

Penix authored Arthurdale, a pictorial history of the community released by Arcadia Publishing in May. The book is 127 pages illustrating the history of Arthurdale.

Articles

• Arthurdale Heritage’s various monthly events were featured in local newspapers.

• In May, Arthurdale was featured in the national publication American Profile.

• Arthurdale was featured in a story in the Summerfield Press, a community paper in Florida.

• Arthurdale was featured in an article about tourism in the WV State Journal November 10-16 issue.

Exhibits

• AHI placed a display at the 2007 Buckwheat Festival as part of the Buckwheat Pride Display exhibition located at the Kingwood Elementary School.

• A map of Arthurdale was featured in companion catalogue to the exhibit “Art and Propaganda” at the German Historical Museum in Berlin. The exhibit reconstructed the forms and ideological background of state-supported art produced between 1930 and 1950 with emphasis on Germany, Italy, the Soviet Union, and the US.

• AHI visited History Day at the WV State Capitol in February.

Conferences

• Penix attended the “Connecting to Collections: The National Conservation Summit” in June. She was selected by the Institute for Museum and Library Services to be one of four representatives from WV to attend this summit in Washington DC. The summit was hosted by the Smithsonian American Art Museum and focused on small and medium-sized museums and libraries to identify strategies for preserving endangered collections and identifying new funding resources.

• Arthurdale was featured on the Preservation Alliance of West Virginia display exhibit at the 2006 National Trust for Historic Preservation conference in Pittsburgh, PA.

• Penix is currently sitting on a planning committee for a local conference that will celebrate the 75th Anniversary of the New Deal in West Virginia. The conference will be held May 29-31, 2008 at Lakeview in Morgantown.

Lectures

Executive Director Penix spoke about Arthurdale at several events including:

• The American HEART “Celebration of History” at West Virginia Wesleyan College in September.

• Kingwood Rotary Club meeting in January.

• 2007 New Deal Festival in July.

Special Funds

The Tractor Restoration Fund started with a balance of $654.23. No money from the fund was spent this year for parts or paint for the tractor. Ending balance is $654.23. The Maintenance Committee has put the tractor on display at this year’s New Deal Festival and Farmer’s Day in Bruceton Mills.

In 2005, Ruth Garlow donated $10,000 to establish The Stockdale Endowment Fund. Income generated from this account will be used specifically for display and maintenance of the Stockdale Collection of Arthurdale furniture, donated by Jeanne Rymer. The account’s fair market value is currently $10,818.01

In its second year, the Arthurdale Honor Roll Committee is still accepting orders for the memorial bricks to be placed around the Arthurdale Honor Roll. Last year, the committee installed a new bronze plaque and two hundred memorial bricks. The dedication of the Honor Roll took place on November 12, 2006. The committee is still working towards its ultimate goal of placing another bronze plaque on the reverse side of the Honor Roll to honor veterans from Arthurdale who served in the armed forces after World War II. The current honor roll account balance is $577.98

When AHI acquired the three Arthurdale School buildings, the AHI Board of Directors voted not to spend any money out of the general account on the schools. This decision was made in order to maintain the buildings currently in use. In order to pay for projects at the school, this year a new account was created specifically for the Arthurdale Schools. The balance for this account is $755.64.

Endowment Fund

AHI established the Staff Salaries/Maintenance Endowment Fund in 2000 with the primary mission to ensure the perpetuation of the organization, its buildings, and artifacts. Income generated from this fund can only be spent on maintenance and staff salaries. This year the fund added $23,691.62, to reach a balance of $81,341.69. The following is a list of donors to the fund from October 1, 2006 to September 30, 2007:
