SELECT A WORKSHOP FOR THE AFTERNOON SESSION

( Implementation of the Preventing Sex Trafficking and Strengthening Families Act (Public Law 113-183)

The core values of this 2014 bipartisan child welfare legislation aimed at preventing child sex trafficking and increasing adoptions include: limiting APPLA as a permanency goal; heightening reporting requirements for missing and runaway youth in the system; and designating an adult to make age-appropriate decisions for youth and ensure they have opportunities to participate in typical teen social activities. We will look at recent Pennsylvania legislation that incorporates the federal mandates into state statutes and juvenile court procedures. We also will discuss how cross-system coordination can create safe, stable environments within which dependent youth can survive, thrive, and realize their full potential and not fall prey to criminal trafficking networks.

( Developing a Dynamic Family Approval Document (Featuring the SWAN Family Profile Online Training)

This interactive session will review some essential elements that SWAN has identified as critical in preparing families and developing the Family Profile. Excerpts from SWAN’s newly developed online Family Profile training will enhance discussion of engaging and preparing families, gathering information and producing a quality Family Approval Document.

( Truancy: Prevention and Intervention

Child welfare professionals will discuss key terms related to truancy in Pennsylvania; examine statewide, regional, and county level truancy data; and discuss factors contributing to truancy, consequences of truancy, prevention and intervention strategies and critical components of successful truancy programs.

( Youth Mental Health First Aid

People trained in first aid can assist accident victims or those who are in a medical crisis until professional help arrives. Similarly, Youth Mental Health First Aid (YMHFA) teaches people the basic knowledge and skills to support a youth who is having an emotional crisis, within the context of cultural awareness and the diversity of youth and families. YMHFA does not teach how to diagnose or treat mental illness, but you will learn to assess situations for life-threatening risks, respond immediately and help youth connect to professionals and other adults who know and care about them.
