JOB SUMMARY

This post has been developed to facilitate the new model of clinical care in Emergency Department in [INSERT TRUST NAME] and recognises the importance of the multidisciplinary team in delivering urgent care. The post holder will be accountable for ensuring that patient care is of a high standard at all times and that standards of care and treatment meet the department’s requirements.

The post holder will be expected to work with the Emergency Department Medical Team to take forward best practice and be an ambassador for Physician Associates. The Physician Associate will work alongside the Emergency Department doctors and nurses and other health care professionals at [INSERT TRUST NAME] Hospital. They will be required to work different areas of the Emergency Department to assess and examine patients, present them, initiate and interpret investigations and recommend treatment. They will need to liaise with other professionals and specialities as required and complete necessary documentation relating to their patients. The PA will be supervised by a designated consultant with individual mentorship to overview career development.

SCOPE OF WORK IN EMERGENCY DEPARTMENT

The post holder will be rotating through the different areas of the Emergency Department (ED). These are:

ED Observation Ward

This a [INSERT NUMBER] bedded ward used as an Observation area for ED patients who require a period of observation and further assessment prior to discharge, over night stay for social reasons, head injury observations and awaiting results. The post holder will be responsible for completing clinical assessment including risk stratification for Veno Thrombo Embolism (VTE), ensuring liaison with community services including completion of electronic discharge summaries. The post holder will also attend Consultant ward rounds.

ED Ambulatory Area

The department has an Ambulatory care area. The PA will have the opportunity to develop their assessment skills and initiate appropriate treatment under the supervision of a senior Doctor. They will be responsible for the smooth flow of the patient pathways and arrange appropriate follow up clinics and ensure that all documentation is completed in a timely manner.

ED Majors

Working as a part of rapid assessment team the post holder will work closely with the Senior Decision Maker and a Health care assistant. The objective is to ensure patients are assessed by a decision maker and that treatment is initiated within in one hour in accordance with the Clinical Quality Indicators.

There may be further opportunities to rotate through other areas within the department including resuscitation and the Urgent Care Centre depending on the interest and aptitude of the post holder.

KEY RESPONSIBILITIES/OUTCOMES:

• Assess and examine acute emergency department patients, present them, initiate and interpret investigations and recommend treatment.

• Exercise a high degree of personal autonomy when assessing and planning care for an agreed caseload of patients with a range of presenting complaints.

• Have, develop and maintain extensive specialist knowledge and experience in Emergency Medicine, acting as a resource for the clinical team and allied health professionals.

• Contribute to achieving and maintaining key Performance Indicators for the Emergency Medicine.

• Support work within Emergency Medicine related to national audits.

• Support recruitment into clinical research being carried out in the department.

• Communicate with GPs and other health professionals that may have had contact with Emergency Medicine patients.

• Contribute to the development of efficient pathways of care in accordance with current best practice and national guidelines.

• Be an active participant in the development of Emergency Medicine through the Trust.

• Ensure confidentiality at all times, only releasing confidential information obtained during the course of employment to those acting in an official capacity in accordance with the provisions of the Data Protection Act and its amendments.

• Contribute to identifying gaps in existing Emergency Medicine services and service improvements to benefit patients.

• Be accountable for care given and to comply with the Fitness to Practice and Code of Conduct standard as established by the UK Physician Associate Register (the PA Managed Voluntary Register) and subsequently the appropriate statutory regulating body when in place. To work within the framework of the scope of professional practice.

CLINICAL QUALITY AND SAFETY

• Attend relevant unit meetings and contribute to projects.

• Together with the team, develop plans to ensure implementation of National Service Frameworks, NICE guidance, and emerging NHS policy relevant to the clinical area of responsibility.

• Ensure there is excellent adherence to infection control policies and practice.

• Participate in monitoring of standards of medical and nursing care using quality scorecards.

• Contribute to the systems and processes in place to comply with Trust policy in relation to, clinical and non-clinical risk, staff and patient complaints and patient and user feedback and involvement.

• Ensure that patients are properly assessed and safely transferred in and out of the respective departments.

• Contribute to environmental safety, clean, tidy and conducive to delivering compassionate care with privacy and dignity.

RESEARCH AND DEVELOPMENT, EDUCATION AND TRAINING

• Participate in the unit’s strategic approach towards education, training and development, taking into consideration the requirements of individual staff, the requirements of the service, and the availability of in-house and commissioned education programmes.

• Participate in research activities when opportunities arise and ensure use of evidence based practice within the department/unit.

• Facilitate an effective learning environment for both medical, pre-registration nursing and Physician Associate students.

EDUCATION AND TRAINING, SELF DEVELOPMENT

• Identify own training and development needs and undertake appropriate training/education as required.

• Participate in an annual individual performance review process where objectives will be agreed, performance monitored and personal development needs discussed.

• Take and pass the UK PA National Re-certification Examination every six years, and subsequently as required by the statutory regulating body when in place.

• Maintain their CPD requirements of 50 hours of CPD per year (25 type 1 and 25 type 2) as stipulated by the PA Register (PA MVR).

• Be trained in and demonstrate fair employment practices, in line with trust policies.

• Act responsibly in respect of colleague’s health, safety and welfare following safe work practices and complying with the Trust’s Health and Safety Policies.

• Adhere to all Trust Policies as applicable.

Staff however, may on occasion have genuine concerns about healthcare matters and consequently the Trust endorses the principle that these may be raised in a responsible and appropriate manner. Consequently the implications arising from the applicability of the disciplinary procedure would not apply.

Data Quality/Security

The post holder is responsible for ensuring that he/she maintains the integrity and quality of both computerised and manual data.

Health and Safety
