Reading Test Practice. Timed Scanning: 10 minutes

Have a look at all the pages to spot where you have the texts you need for each set of questions.

Read the questions and underline key words. Browse the texts for Part 1 noticing the headings. Then start looking for the answers. You don’t need to read it all, of course. It’s better to scan fast the text a few times than to read it intensively – you are not supposed to have time for that! After 5 minutes, move on to Part 2 if you can’t find some answer. See if those questions are easier and you can secure more points.

Part 2: Getting Around in London

Answer the questions as briefly and to-the-point as possible!

4. Where should you remember to touch your Oyster card at the exit?

5. Can you plan to cycle and also use the underground?

6. When can you avoid having a shower when cycling?

Transport: Using an Oyster Card

You must touch your Oyster card on the yellow card readers when travelling.

Why touch in and out and how?

So we know where your journey started and ended and can charge you the right fare if you're using pay as you go.

What you need to do is slightly different, depending on whether you are using buses, trams, rail, river services or the Emirates Airline.

• Bus and tram: touch your Oyster card on a yellow card reader only at the start of a journey: inside the bus when you board, at a tram stop before you get on a tram. Don't touch it again when you get off.

• Tube, DLR, London Overground & National Rail: Touch your Oyster card on the yellow card reader at the start & end of your journey. If you're at a station without gates or the gates are already open you must still touch in & out.

• River : Pay as you go (Thames Clippers only) Show your Oyster card at the kiosk on the pier or to a ticket seller on the boat. You can pay for a paper ticket using your pay as you go credit - this is 10% cheaper than the cash fare. This does not count towards the daily price cap. Other operators do not accept pay as you go as a way of paying for travel on their river services.

• Emirates Air Line : Touch your Oyster card on the yellow card reader at an Emirates Air Line gate at the start of your journey and touch out at the end to pay a discounted fare.

Your Oyster card is a contactless smartcard that uses radio frequency to communicate and exchange data with the card reader. If you have other contactless cards, (like payment cards or building passes), in the same wallet as your Oyster card, they may not be able to be read together. You should take your Oyster card out of your wallet to touch it on the yellow card reader

Get cycling! Renting a bike

Would you like to try cycling but don't have a bike? Maybe you want to introduce friends or family who haven't cycled before. Renting a bike is a great way to get started. You can hire a bike for a short time, and is available to everyone over 14-years-old. When hiring a bike for more than a few hours, you might be able to save some money by using a company that specialises in hiring for longer periods.

Bikes on Public Transport

Tube: You can take a folded bike anywhere and anytime. Click map for full PDF of where you can travel with your non-folding bike. Bus: Folded bikes are accepted at the driver's discretion. The rules are the same for pushchairs and larger items of shopping and luggage.

Go Pedal: A company that delivers a bike to you wherever and whenever you want it. Then you can come and collect it when you're finished. We do men's and women's adult bikes, rear child seats and trailers for little ones, and child's bikes for 6 year-olds onwards. There is no better way to see London than by bike. (well, walking is great too, but you can't cover so much ground) On a bike you can see so many sights, while avoiding the traffic congestion; you're not contributing to the pollution, and you're getting some great exercise. These are the reasons why more and more Londoners are getting around by bike: bicycle usage has doubled over the past 5 years and about half a million bike journeys are now made each day in the city. It's fun, it's good for you and the environment and it's easy. Give it a try!

Electric bikes: An e-bike is a bicycle that includes an electric motor and a battery. You pedal and use the gears in the normal way, but the bike uses the electric motor to do some of the hard work. Uses and benefits:

• Commuting: the ease of riding means you can avoid the hassle of showering & changing when you reach your destination.

• Hill climbing: makes climbing hills light work, great if you live in a hilly area!

• Shopping: load up your electric bike with heavy groceries

• Go further: some electric bikes have battery ranges in excess of 40 miles

• Travel faster: easier to set off quickly from junctions, allowing you to better keep up with other road users

• Green: instead of using a car or public transport, they help keep urban pollution to a minimum

• Affordable: no licence, insurance, or MOT needed. No need to pay for petrol or diesel

• Health and fitness: you're still exercising, you still need to pedal. You can also turn the motor off and use it as a regular bike for an extra challenge!
