This course is designed to provide individual with critical thinking and problem solving knowledge to use in everyday practice. Course work includes classroom and simulations practice. Upon satisfactory completion of this entire course, students will be allowed to take the written and skills competency for interpreting cardiac heart rhythms and performing EKGs by completing the ASPT National EKG Exam. The main focus of this course is to prepare individuals for entry level into healthcare, work as a Cardiovascular Technician and be a valuable asset to the community. Course Format: This course will be taught as a traditional face to face course. This course is 100 hours of classroom instruction and simulation skills. Patient care is focused on adult and elderly population. Student Learning Outcomes:Upon successful completion of this entire course, students will be allowed to take the written and skills competency for interpreting cardiac heart rhythms and performing successful EKGs in order to complete the ASPT National EKG Exam.Text, Technology and additional materialsRequired Textbook(s): Basic Arrhythmias by Gail Walraven, Current edition and “The Health Care Professional’s Guide to Quality Electrocardiography Training”. Course does not allow e-textbooks or used textbooks.Supplies/Other Requirements: Appropriate college dress; Caribbean blue scrub top and scrub pants, white leather shoes (no open toe or heel) and name tag are recommended. Spiral note pad and black ink pen.Must have 2 forms of matching identification preferably driver’s license and social security card. Course OverviewTopics Include: See Cardiovascular Technician Course/ Curriculum Outline.EVALUATION METHODS:The class will have 6 exams (60% of grade), one writing assignment paper (10%) and 1 final cumulative exam (30% of grade) throughout the course. 1) 6 exams worth 10% each (60%); must maintain 80 grade average on exams.2) Final Exam is worth 30% of the final grade; must acquire grade of 80 or above to pass. 3) Writing assignment paper is worth 10%; must acquire grade of 80 or above. 4) Student must obtain overall average of 80% to pass course.Lab proficiency is determined by student completing a minimum of 80% of required analysis of each simulation for each heart rhythm interpretation and EKG skill performance, including all critical areas of the skill. Grading and Minimum Passing Criteria: Each student must have a cumulative grade of 80 for the classroom test grades and an 80 on the final exam to progress to clinical. Students must also show competence in lab practices and skills with a grade of satisfactory in order to progress to clinical. The instructor will make every effort to return tests within two class meetings and written assignments within two weeks. Course uses a 10 point grading scale.CRITICAL SUCCESS STRATEGIES:The student must possess a knowledge base and skills from certification in CPR/BLS skills.Course Workload is described in the Cardiovascular Technician Outline and Curriculum outline. The student must also demonstrate a set of abilities / skills referred to as 'technical standards' which include the following six (6) categories: observation, communication, motor, intellectual, behavioral / social and emotional intelligence. Emotional Intelligence: Students must possess and further develop emotional intelligence. ?Emotional intelligence encompasses knowledge and management of one's own emotional life and the skills to process the various workplace and client situations that arise including death of a client unexpectedly or with prolonged suffering, negative responses to care, or strained work environments or coworker relationships. ?Responses to giving and receiving feedback both positive and negative are also a part of emotional intelligence. Environment:? Health care is often delivered in high stress areas, requiring management of multiple roles, tasks and decisions simultaneously.? The equipment and supplies used in the delivery of care may present a danger to individuals with sensitivities and allergies, especially to certain fumes and / or latex products.The student must continuously be open to communication and transmit and receive communication with faculty and other students, as deemed appropriate. Students must follow chain of command for issues or concerns for the course, given to the student on the first day of class.ATTENDANCE POLICY:To remain officially enrolled in the course, all students must enter class prior to the class 10 percent (census) date, which is the date set by the state for reporting purposes. Regular and punctual attendance is expected of all students in order for them to achieve their potential in class and to develop desirable personal traits necessary to succeed in employment. Class attendance is calculated from the first scheduled class meeting to the last. Late arrivals and/or early departures may count toward total absences. You are responsible for material covered and assignments regardless of whether or not you are present. For this course, if a student misses more than 8%* or 8 hours in the course the student will be dropped. The student can be dropped at ANY TIME during the semester including that time period before the date designated each semester as the last day a student can drop without grade penalty. The _8_% rule includes absences from class for any reason (including sickness, jury duty/court, work demands, funerals). If a student is dropped by an instructor due to excessive absences, a grade of “WF” will be issued. A “WF” is a GRADE PENALTY and could affect his/her financial aid. The student must ask for REINSTATEMENT permission from the instructor to reenter class. If this request is denied, the student may petition the Dean for reinstatement. If the Dean denies the request, the Vice President of Instruction will make the final ruling on the decision.Students who choose to participate in College related activities such as SGA or Athletics must adhere to the attendance policy. Students are responsible for informing their instructors in advance of absences and are expected to make arrangements for making up work missed. In such cases, upon approval of the instructor, class time missed will not be counted as absences provided the students are otherwise in good academic standing (2.0 cumulative GPA).RELIGIOUS OR SOLEMN OBSERVANCE POLICYJohnston Community College authorizes two excused absences from classes each academic year for religious or solemn observances. For the purposes of this policy, an academic year begins on the first day of fall classes in August and ends on the last day of summer classes in July each year. Students requesting absence from class for religious or solemn observance must complete the Religious or Solemn Observance Absence Request Form and obtain instructor approval at least two weeks prior to the date of the absence.
