The course will strengthen the student's knowledge of management theory and skills, and prepare the student for leadership in the healthcare field. A minimum of three hours of reading or written work is estimated to be needed to prepare for one credit hour each week; therefore, students can expect 9 hours of work outside of class each week. See list of HSM topics in the class schedule section below. Journal articles must be published in academic or trade publications. Please email article and summary to Dr. Pruitt, and bring enough printed copies for everyone. See rubric and example. Evidence-based management in-class presentationStudents will verbally present evidence-based analysis to the class, including explaining the specific management problem, cited and summarized literature article, and analysis of how the evidence supports solution to the management problem. Presentation must be no longer than 3 minutes. No Power Point presentation deck is required. See rubric.Exam: An in-class exam will cover lectures, reading material, and EBMgt topics. The exam format will be short answer, including questions testing student’s course content understanding application of EBMgt analysis fundamentals.Case analyses:For each assigned case, students will be responsible for a) producing written analysis and b) participating in the team-based case analysis activity. Groups will be created for team analysis. See rubrics for the written assignment and activity leadership.Health services management consulting project proposal:To prepare you for one of the HPM program culminating experiences, the Special Project, a consulting project proposal is required for each student. The proposal may be different than your final Special Project for the program. Deliverables include a problem definition draft, a rough draft, and a final proposal project. Only the final proposal will be graded. See separate handouts for format and rubric. HSM in-class presentation:Based on the student’s written HSM consulting project proposal, a 10 minute (maximum) in-class presentation of the management problem and proposed solutions will be required. Business appropriate attire must be worn for presentation. See rubric.Personal leadership development plan:The Personal Leadership Development Plan is a reflective writing project based on your True North readings. The assignment will be a series of short answer questions. The plan should take at least three hours to complete. See Personal Leadership Development Plan rubric.Class participation and HMSA meeting attendance:Effective graduate education requires consistent attendance to class and regular contribution to class discussions. The emphasis in class will be lecture and discussion.Exam Policies:Exams taken late without a signed medical excuse will automatically lose 10% of the potential grade. Exams taken late will be newly written exams. The course offers no repeat exams if an exam is failed. Grading Policies: Assignments will not be accepted after the assigned due date. In the event of a medical or other emergency, students should contact the instructors prior to the due date to make alternative arrangements. Evidence of an emergency situation may be required. Assignments are compared automatically with a database of journal articles, web articles, the internet and previously submitted papers. Plagiarism tutorial: Turnitin tutorial: : An institution may not release a paper to a plagiarism detection software without the student’s prior consent unless all personally identifiable information has been removed, such as a student’s name, social security number, student number, etc. Note that a paper/essay is considered an educational record and an institution may not ask a student to waive their rights under FERPA for the purpose of submitting papers to a plagiarism detection software. Cheating Statement: The USF College of Public Health expects students to maintain academic honesty in all courses. By virtue of being registered in a public health course, students agree to refrain from cheating.
