SAMPLE LETTER TO STAFF

Dear Certified Staff and Paraprofessionals,

It is our pleasure to announce that Cooperative Educational Services certified staff and paraprofessionals are nominating a Paraprofessional of the Year, and we need YOUR help. We invite you to take a few moments to think about who you feel is an exemplary classroom paraprofessional. This person should be one who has demonstrated exceptional skill and dedication in the performance of his/her job, thereby earning them the respect and admiration of students, teachers, administrators, coworkers and parents.

Certified staff and paraprofessionals should nominate ONE full-time paraprofessional (only paraprofessionals who assist teachers in the delivery of instruction and related services to students are eligible for this award) and the selection committee will select finalists based on the number of votes received.

The selection committee will interview each finalist and our Executive Director makes the final decision. From there, the C.E.S. Paraprofessional of the Year will represent our district at the awards ceremony to be held in November. The Connecticut Paraprofessional of the Year serves as an ambassador for public education and will become a member of the School Paraprofessional Advisory Council.

District Selection Process for "Paraeducator of the Year"

Our District, XXXX is proudly submitting to you an application for the Anne Marie Murphy Paraeducator of the Year on behalf of our selection, XXXXXXX.

Here are the steps we took in our selection process:

In February, the application packet and supporting materials were reviewed with members of DISECT (District Internal Special Education Coordination Team).

Members of DISECT solicited nominations via email from certified and non-certified staff working in their buildings. Nominating staff were asked to provide specific examples of the nominee's contributions as a para-educator working within the XXX Public Schools.

Nomination forms were reviewed at the building level and the DISECT member from each building was responsible for pulling a small team together to select a single candidate to be moved forward in the process.

Members of DISECT reviewed paperwork submitted for the nominees from each building in the district and, based upon the merits of each and a consensus of the group, selected one individual to represent the district.

Nominee was asked, at that point, whether or not she would accept this nomination and, after agreeing to do so, completed the entire application packet and secured the necessary letters of recommendation.

In May, the completed packet was forwarded to Director of Pupil Services.

Superintendent reviewed packet and he endorsed the nominee with his signature.

District "Para of the Year" is recognized at the building level at end of school year and at the District level at the Convocation at the beginning of the school year. A plaque is engraved with the Paraeducator's name and is presented to him/her at that time.
