Position Description 2016-2017

Schedule

This position works 36 hours per week, including 12:30 – 8:30 p.m. on Wednesday evenings twice per month. Otherwise, hours are flexible, Monday – Friday, with occasional evening/weekend responsibilities.

Role Description

This position includes collaboration on work toward Sarah’s mission of providing hospitality for women in transition who are seeking housing, community and safety. Sarah’s fosters the self-empowerment of women in community through life skill development, advocacy and referral services. The efforts of the St. Joseph Worker (SJW) will include a balance of systemic, direct service, and organizational work.

Accountability

The SJW is accountable to the Director and House Manager of Sarah’s, meeting regularly with them, and receiving support, guidance and direction from them. She reports directly to the House Manager in most areas of the position and works collaboratively with other staff and residents.

NOTE: The position’s responsibilities are listed below. This is a listing of areas the SJW may be asked to participate in but is not necessarily exhaustive. The SJW position is ever-evolving based on the needs of the organization and the women who call Sarah’s home. Flexibility is expected from all staff at Sarah’s. The Director and House Manager are committed to ensuring that the SJW reaches her personal and professional goals and they are willing to make reasonable modifications to the role as requested by the SJW according to her goals.

Qualifications

1) Ability to work with and relate to women of diverse backgrounds, language skills, and life experiences

2) Sensitivity to the needs of women in transition, including immigrant, asylum, and advocacy processes

3) Knowledge of the CSJ community and commitment to social justice

4) BA degree; volunteer experience preferred

5) Skill in use and knowledge of computers, ability to use Microsoft Office and Gmail

6) Ability to maintain confidentiality as well as develop and maintain positive relationships with various constituents (residents, volunteers, other staff, partner organizations, etc.)

7) Ability to conduct research and gather information using various sources (Internet, phone calls, etc.)

8) Demonstrate organization and time management skills and ability to prioritize a wide range of duties

9) Ability to work as a team member as well as independently and show self-motivation and leadership for projects

10) Hold valid driver’s license and has reliable transportation to and from work

11) Ability to successfully use written, electronic and oral forms of communication

12) Ability to maintain calm in critical situations; familiarity with facilitating or practicing conflict resolution is preferred

13) Ability to practice innovation and implement creative ideas in an effective way

14) Adaptability and willingness to be flexible

Specific Responsibilities

1. Mentor residents around resume, job applications and job search (especially online and phone follow up), provide assistance in public housing application and/or other housing search and referrals.

2. Learn the services and agencies available to the women of Sarah’s and help to explain and share resources with residents and staff as needed (the Director may send SJW to applicable agencies to do learning/research/ preparation for the women).

3. Participate in and plan activities for the life of the household by coordinating, assisting with and being present at household events including but not limited to community meals (first Wednesday of each month and up to one other evening per month)( 6:00-7:00p.m.), community meetings (first Wednesday of each month) (7:00-8:00p.m.), bread-getting (Wednesdays 8:00-8:30 p.m. twice per month), in house trainings, group excursions (art gallery, library tour, etc.) and in-house activities (movie night, crafts, etc.) and celebrations, etc. The SJW will be responsible for Wednesday dinner oversight which includes planning, communicating dish assignments and ensuring follow through, menu flyer preparation and occasional cooking.

4. Assist with ongoing education and follow-up with residents regarding solid waste sorting, composting, collecting organics, worm composting, etc.

5. Work one-on-one with residents to bring sustainability practices to their communities.

6. Assist Community Relations staff with updating donor database, sending thank-you notes; updating tour packets and flyers/brochures to promote Sarah’s.

7. Assist Community Relations staff with managing Sarah’s Facebook page and regularly creating posts

8. Spend time getting to know and experiencing life with the residents, including scheduling and participating in “field trips” such as walks, bike rides, trips to museums, recycling activities, holiday activities, etc.

9. Spend intentional time in communal areas (e.g. the kitchen, dining room, community room) talking and connecting with residents informally

10. Prepare household calendars, monthly newsletter and activity flyers; coordinate activities through email and phone contacts.

11. Collaborate with House Mentor to provide health, wellness, and learning opportunities for residents.

12. Manage the housing line, listen to the calls and respond with resources; once a week write a report and send to the Director.

13. Assist residents in meeting their learning goals. This may include tutoring in English (such as helping in the completion of assignments, essays, and worksheets) and computer or telephone use, gathering additional education resources for women and being available for general assistance. Completion of the ELL tutor class at Minnesota Literacy Council (12 hours) is advised during the first month of work.

14. Accompany or drive women new to the USA and to Sarah’s on first appointments; assist residents in registering for English classes, getting passport photos, accessing social services, and other needs as requested.

15. Provide other services to residents as requested, including but not limited to document preparation, administrative support, household shopping, assisting in welcoming new women or preparing for women to move out, and other special projects.

16. Assist in coordinating volunteer efforts with other staff.

17. Participate in regularly scheduled staff meetings, in-services and professional development opportunities as requested or desired.

18. Meet regularly with the House Manager for support, planning and performance review.

19. Maintain an up-to-date electronic list of resources. Regularly verify the addresses, phone numbers, and emails of organizations women have successfully utilized. Continue to research additional resources and inform staff and residents of one’s you believe would be beneficial.

20. Manage the intake and distribution of clothing and household item donations. This includes communicating with staff and donors, maintaining organization in storage areas and assisting residents to ensure they have all the things they need, especially around changing weather and seasons. For example, lead the winter collection and coat distribution to residents. Take extra clothes and household items to Goodwill and/or Joseph’s Coat as needed.

21. Join and participate with any of the working groups of the Sisters of St. Joseph of Carondelet related to the life and mission of Sarah’s as requested.

22. Mentor future SJW and interns by keeping the SJW/Intern Guide updated and mentoring/training a possible summer intern at the end of the year.

23. Other tasks as assigned.
