Scope of Practice

In Minnesota EMT certification allows a person to work on an ambulance.

▪ Skills include:

▪ CPR and AED

▪ Splinting

▪ Airway Management

▪ Ambulance Operations

▪ Disaster triage

▪ Bleeding control / wound management

▪ Limited medications

EMT Course Information

• 4 Credit Class

• Meets Monday and Wednesday evenings 6pm-10pm

• Expect Saturday Practice Sessions

• 2010 Course Fee $470 (charged to your student account)

– This fee includes the textbook and workbook

– Expect other fees!

• Practical Exam Fee ($100 cash)

• National Registry Exam and Registration Fee ($75)

• Clinical Shirt Fee ($30)

• Class size limited to 20

• Course cannot be taken for 0 credit

• Course Fee cannot be waived

• Course cannot be audited

• Pre-requisite

– Professional Level CPR (AHA or ARC)

– Recent Mantoux Test (within 6 months of clinical experience)

– Proof of Hepatitis B vaccination

EMT Certification does not improve your chances of Medical School Admission

• Skills learned may aid in Med School experience

• EMT experience can be helpful to Physician Assistant programs

Course Completion vs State/National Certification

• You may complete the course and receive credit, and elect to not become certified

• For initial courses (in Minnesota), State and National Registration is the same

• Certification Period

– 2 years- ending March 31

• Re-certification

• You may opt to allow national certification to expire and maintain state certification

• Reciprocity with other states…

Classroom Final exam

– Required to receive credit

Practical Exam

– Provided with the course

– Skill stations and scenario driven

Written Exam

– Computer adaptive testing

– Not available locally

• Nearest locations include Alexandria, Twin Cities, Hutchinson, Willmar

Course Admission Process and Criteria

Course size is limited

• Primary source of membership for EMT Squad

• Complete questionnaire from EMT Website

• Attend open house/information night

• Interview with Coordinator Oct 24th

– Sign Up sheet available at Life Safety Dispatch Tuesday Oct 19th 6pm

• Students accepted to the class will be notified via email no later than Monday October 25th

• Wait list will be generated.

Preference given in this order: (current)

• Sophomore

• First Year Student

• Junior

• Senior

• Equal chances for CSB/SJU Students

• Preference given to genuine interest in EMT Squad membership

• Strong preference shown for research of what Emergency Medical Services is and does!

• Preference given to clarity of how this course fits into career plans

• LATE APPLICATIONS WILL NOT BE ACCEPTED

• Falsification or inaccurate information will result in disqualification of the individual

Study Abroad

• Current Students wishing to take the EMT course who are studying abroad can complete an extended questionnaire available via email

• Request questionnaire from Coordinator

Please note that acceptance to the EMT Course does not grant

membership to the St John’s EMT Squad.
