Sprinkler save - Ivyland Fire Co. was dispatch to the 800 block of Jacksonville Rd for a fire alarm around 4:15am. The call was upgraded to a commercial building fire when police arrived to find smoke in the building. Assistant 62 arrived and reported smoke in the building with a sprinkler activation. A single sprinkler head extinguished 95% of the fire in a second-floor hair salon. The remainder of the fire was extinguished with a water extinguisher.

The Building Industry Association of Hawaii sent out an invitation Friday for a celebratory pau hana to mark a new law that continues to prohibit counties from requiring single-family and duplex homes to have sprinklers.

Within hours, a fire killed three people at the Marco Polo, a 36-story, 568-unit residential complex along Kapiolani Boulevard.

The BIA cancelled the pau hana. But the fire at the Marco Polo has put the spotlight on Act 53, formerly known as Senate Bill 611, which makes it illegal for any county to require single-family homes or duplexes to have sprinklers for the next 10 years.

Needed for Training Use and in good working condition a DRY-BARREL Fire Hydrant for the Public Safety Class at Middle Bucks Inst. of Tech. in Jamison.

Hydrant will need to have all caps with a 4 ½ or 5 inch steamer connection and 2 1/2 side connections all with NST threads.

* Would be a plus if the hydrant had about 10-14 inches of pipe still attached. Please contact MBIT Public Safety Teacher, John Fala at

jfala@ to make a donation of the fire hydrant.

Understanding the Roles, Challenges & Needs of Our Nation’s Fire and Emergency Services Introduction

On December 8, 2016, member organizations of the Congressional Fire Services Institute’s (CFSI) National Advisory Committee (NAC)

approved a resolution to develop a white paper that describes the current state of the American Fire Service in protecting the public, their property and the nation’s critical infrastructure from fire and other emergencies. It is designed to help government officials better

understand what is expected of firefighters nationwide who respond to over 35 million emergency calls annually – and how specific

federal programs enhance the readiness and response capabilities of these brave men and women.

The information contained in the White Paper Appendix addresses important aspects of the federal government’s role in supporting the mission of our nation’s fire and emergency services. The Federal Fire Prevention and Control Act of 1974 is the foundation on which the United States Fire Administration (USFA) was established. The legislation also contains the authorizing language for the Assistance

to Firefighters (AFG) and Staffing for Adequate Fire and Emergency Response (SAFER) grant programs. The Fourth Fire Service Needs Assessment, produced by the National Fire Protection Association (NFPA), describes the current needs of the fire service in terms of equipment, staffing and training. And the NAC resolutions reflect the consensus positions taken by NAC members throughout the years regarding key areas of federal support for our nation’s fire and emergency departments.

If you have questions about the information contained in this white paper, please contact the Congressional Fire Services Institute at

The PA Senate Passed Firefighter Grants Reauthorization.

The legislation, which was unanimously approved by the Senate Homeland Security and Governmental Affairs Committee on May 17, reauthorizes the Assistance to Firefighters (AFG), the Staffing for Adequate Fire and Emergency Response (SAFER), and Fire Prevention and Safety (FP&S) grant programs through Fiscal Year 2023.

Every year, the majority of North America's fire deaths happen at home. The solution to this problem - the home fire sprinkler - exists. However, many states face intense opposition for fire sprinklers, despite this technology being a model building code requirement. As a fire sprinkler advocate, you can be a powerful voice for this life-saving technology. This webinar will demonstrate (in five easy steps) how attendees can participate in a growing grassroots movement across North America in support of this technology. By better understanding the power of advocacy and linking up with like-minded advocates in their region, attendees can better promote fire sprinklers, counter sprinkler opponents, and underscore a technology designed to save lives.

Thursday, September 21, 12:30-1:30 p.m. EST. Register today for this free webinar.

NFPA's new report, "U.S. Experience with Sprinklers," sheds light on fire sprinkler operation during home fires and the loss mitigated by this technology. Consider these statistics found in the new report and accompanying fact sheet. During reported U.S. home fires between 2010-2014:

- the civilian death rate was 81 percent lower in homes with fire sprinklers than in homes without them

- the average firefighter injury rate was nearly 80 percent lower when fire sprinklers were present during fires

- when sprinklers were present, fires were kept to the room of origin 97 percent of the time

- the home fire death rate was 90 percent lower when fire sprinklers and hardwired smoke alarms were present. By comparison, this death rate is only 18 percent lower when battery-powered smoke alarms are present but automatic extinguishing systems weren't.

The results of a recent EPA study regarding ground water contamination caused by the products in AFFF (PFOS/PFOA), show that 97% of PFOS/PFOA actually come from the AFFF and 3% from all other products combined. Anyone using AFFF is exposing themselves to serious environment risks.

Volunteer Fire Companies in PA are subject to Open Records Act Requests. The danger of not quickly (within 5 days) responding to each request will cause the Fire company significant long- term problems.

A Request can only seek existing documents/records or printable data (that could be generated by striking a “print” button on your software).
