Name_________________________________Period____ Date___________________Enduring Issues Essay Tips for SuccessIntroduction_____ Includes a clear definition of the selected enduring issue._____ Includes a clear thesis incorporating 3 examples of the issue enduring over time. For example: The enduring issue of power can be seen throughout the French Revolution through the examples of Louis’ unjust absolute monarchy, Robespierre’s unlimited rule as a brutal dictator, and Napoleon’s reign as the self-crowned emperor of France.BODY #1 (follow the list below IN ORDER!)_____ Topic sentence that tells the reader what this paragraph will be about. This sentence must introduce the first example of the enduring issue (your first document!) For example: King Louis XVI’s abuse of power was one of the major causes of the French Revolution of 1789._____ Historical circumstances about example #1 of the enduring issue. This includes relevant dates/time period, important location(s), and significant events and people that led up to the example you will discuss. For example, for a paragraph about King Louis XVI’s abuse of power, a student should include:Louis XVI came from a long line of monarchs who abused their power. For example, his grandfather, Louis XIV was known as the “Sun King” because people said the world revolved around him. He also built the magnificent Versailles Palace. Louis XVI continued this lifestyle by lavishly spending on himself and his family. To stay in power, Louis XVI forged alliances with nobles and the Catholic Church. He intentionally kept a social hierarchy that favored the nobles and clergy. The land and tax system benefitted the 1 and 2 Estates; the Third Estate had to pay almost all of the taxes, despite holding a disproportionate amount of land. There was no social mobility, which is why the Third Estate to revolted in 1789. _____ Evidence. 1 piece of cited evidence from your first document that helps prove that this issue strongly relates to the example that you’re writing about. You must give credit to the author of each document, rather than saying “document 1 says” or “it says”._____ Your Analysis of the document AFTER providing the quote. Remember, analysis is NOT found in any of the documents. YOU have to CREATE analysis. Analysis basically makes your writing more meaningful. There are many ways to incorporate analysis:Explain WHY something occurred.Explain HOW something occurred.*Connect* the document to another time in history where something similar occurred. To earn analysis points, you then need to EXPLAIN WHY we see similar patterns in history like this!Remember: It’s far better to give 1 strong connection in your essay that 2-3 weak ones!WEAK CONNECTION (analysis)STRONG CONNECTION (analysis)King Louis XVI abused his power during the late 1700s. He overtaxed the Third Estate and didn’t allow them to participate in government. Another leader who did this was Hitler, who didn’t let Jewish people have any rights.King Louis XVI abused his power during the late 1700s by overtaxing the Third Estate and denying them political rights. He accumulated power by aligning himself with the 1 and 2 Estates who offered him loyalty in exchange for low taxes and political representation. He also promoted the Divine Right Theory, which made people scared to question his power. Another leader who abused his power by manipulating people was Hitler. Hitler did this by favoring the Aryan group of Germans who he felt were racially superior. He gave incentives to Aryans such as festivals, parades, jobs and affordable cars (Volkswagon). He did this to gain support from millions of German people. He also hired artists to create propaganda posters of him looking like a God-like figure or the savior of Germany. Power is an enduring issue because we can see that leaders from different countries and different time periods used similar tactics to accumulate power. Louis and Hitler wanted their people to view them as Gods so that people would be afraid to challenge their power.Follow the same guidelines for your second and third body paragraphs!Conclusion_____Restates the thesis statement (from introduction) using different wording.
